The *Zuanling Ji* records Zhongru Jiu (Stalactite Wine), which treats wind-deficiency with rebellious Qi ascending, stabilizes the Five Viscera (Wu Zang, 五脏), unblocks all joints, benefits the nine orifices (Jiu Qiao, 九窍), tonifies essence and brightens the eyes, replenishes deficiency and exhaustion in the Lower Jiao (Lower Burner, 下焦), and treats weakness and pain in the legs and feet. Long-term use prolongs life, enhances longevity, promotes robustness and good complexion without aging.
Take three liang of Stalactite (Zhongru, 钟乳), finely ground, placed in a double-layered fine silk bag, immersed in six sheng of clear wine. Use a white porcelain container, seal tightly, and simmer in a water bath until two-thirds of the wine has evaporated. Remove from the water bath, replenish with wine to the original volume, seal, and let stand for seven days. Drink when ready; take one fu (three he) per dose. (Observe dietary and lifestyle taboos as prescribed for medicinal herbs.)
Another method for taking Stalactite with wine.
Refined Stalactite (three liang) is mixed with one dou of fresh, non-fermented clear wine in a non-leaking vessel, sealed with honey. In winter, leave for seven days; in summer, for two days. Take three he warm on an empty stomach, twice daily. Gradually increase the dosage until therapeutic effects are observed. The total amount should be consumed within fifteen days. Alternatively, some consume three liang mixed with wine over three days. (Dietary restrictions, sexual abstinence, and other precautions apply, consistent with the *Qianjin Yi Fang*.)
Stalactite from any region is suitable if it is white, thin, and lustrous. Place it in a porous cloth bag and suspend it in a cauldron, ensuring it does not touch the bottom. Boil over charcoal fire, changing the water three times daily. After boiling, wash thoroughly, return to the cauldron, and boil until the water color no longer changes. Remove the bag, rinse in fresh spring water to remove surface foam, then boil in five sheng of cow's milk over low heat for one day. Before consuming the Stalactite powder, drink this cow's milk, optionally mixed with wine. Pour the powder from the bag onto a plate, wash with water, and grind in a mortar for seven days and nights, adding water frequently to maintain a consistency like cow's milk. Do not let it dry out to ensure uniform fineness. The four colored "Ying" stones are no longer used. According to records, White Quartz (Baishiyin, 白石英) is found everywhere; currently, Zezhou and Luozhou mountains produce it. Those from "Haozhou" are large, about three cun in diameter and five to six cun long. Zezhou origin is considered superior and easier to harvest. Scriptures state that Purple Quartz (Zishiyin, 紫石英) has a sweet and acrid flavor, is warm in nature, and non-toxic. It treats cough and rebellious Qi due to pathogenic factors, tonifies deficiencies, and addresses infertility in women caused by wind-cold in the uterus. It treats upper Qi rebellion, heart and abdominal pain, cold-heat pathogenic factors, Qi stagnation, tonifies Heart Qi, calms fright palpitations, stabilizes the soul, fills the Lower Jiao, stops thirst, removes chronic cold from the Stomach, dissipates abscesses, and improves complexion. Long-term use warms the Middle Jiao, lightens the body, and prolongs life. It grows in valleys of Mount Tai and can be harvested anytime. Changshi (Long Stone) serves as its guide drug. Combined with Poria (Fuling, 茯苓), Ginseng (Renshen, 人参), and Peony (Shaoyao, 芍药), it treats Qi knotting in the Heart. Combined with Aconite Root (Tianxiong, 天雄) and Acorus (Changpu, 菖蒲), it treats cholera. It is incompatible with Bianqing, Prepared Aconite Root (Fuzi, 附子), Anemarrhena (Muxia, 麦门冬 - *Note: Text says Mai Gou Jiang, likely referring to Mai Dong, Sheng Jiang, Gou Teng*), Coptis (Huanglian, 黄连), and Scutellaria (implied). Currently, Mount Tai stone is preferred for its deep, transparent color and root structure. Bao Ling Mountain stone is also good. Other varieties include Nancheng stone (no root), Qingmian stone (dark black, opaque), Linyi stone (eye-like inclusion), Wuxing stone (purple edges, dull), and Kuaiji Zhuji stone (pomegranate-seed like). These were previously used interchangeably, but now only Mount Tai stone is selected.
Another method for refining and taking Quartz, transmitted by Zhou Si Hu Chuwen from Duan Shilang, is very effective.
White Quartz (five da liang) is slightly crushed, mixed with five sheng of strong vinegar in a non-leaking porcelain vessel, covered, and buried in a shady northern corner of the house for seventy days. Remove, discard vinegar, crush, and wet-grind like powder preparation. Clarify and decant, repeat grinding and wet-processing for fourteen days. Add three small sheng of strong vinegar, place in a non-leaking jar, cover, and bury for twenty days. Remove, wash with water until vinegar taste is gone, grind extremely fine. Mix with three large sheng of high-quality donkey milk in a non-leaking vessel, steam-boil until milk is exhausted. Prepare pills according to formula.
Another pill method.
Raw Dry Rehmannia Root (Sheng Gan Dihuang, 生干地黄), Poria (Fuling, 茯苓 - from Huazhou), Ginseng (Renshen, 人参 - from Luzhou), Asparagus Tuber (Tianmendong, 天门冬 - dehearted), and Goji Bark (Gouqi Baipi, 枸杞白皮 - local harvest), each three liang.
Pulverize these five herbs into powder, mix uniformly with the prepared quartz powder, and bind with refined honey into pills the size of wu zi (wu berry seeds). Start with ten pills, increase to twenty pills, taken once daily, later administered with Di Huang Jiu (Rehmannia Wine).
Another wine method.
Raw Rehmannia Root (Sheng Dihuang, 生地黄) cut into five small sheng, Black Soybeans (Wudou, 乌豆) two small sheng.
Soak these two ingredients in non-fermented clear wine for five nights, then take.
Three methods for miscellaneous boiling of Quartz with gold, silver, and herbal decoctions, and drinking water boiled in silver pots.
*Qianjin Yi Fang* method for boiling Quartz.
Five da liang of Quartz from Zezhou, clean and free of spots. Crush into sizes similar to soybeans or buckwheat. Remove fine dust, wash thoroughly in water, place in a double-layered silk bag tied with string. Boil in five sheng of clear water in a non-leaking iron cauldron. Suspend the bag so it does not touch the bottom (use a stick across the rim to hang it, 2-3 cun above the bottom). Boil down to one sheng of liquid. Let stand overnight in a bowl, clarify, and drink the clear liquid on an empty stomach in the morning. Can also be used to cook thin porridge. Walk 500 steps after dosing, followed by three he of clear wine. If Quartz is boiled twenty times, it loses potency. Wrap in cloth and bury three chi deep under a south-facing wall for one hundred days to restore usability, though new Quartz is superior.
Another method for boiling Quartz with Gold, Silver, and Ginseng.
Gold (ten da liang), Silver (four da liang), White Quartz (five da liang), Ginseng (two da liang).
Clean an iron cauldron, add ingredients. Add three sheng of water first, insert a stick to the bottom, mark the water level. Add two dou seven sheng more water (total three dou). Boil until bubbles resemble fish eyes, reduce until reaching the marked level, then stop fire. Quickly place wet earth at the bottom of the cauldron. Collect the liquid in a non-leaking vessel. Filter out gold, silver, and stone. Consume the Ginseng and liquid slowly. Take three he on an empty stomach in the morning, two he at night. Can be taken as food adjunct. Drink appropriate amount of wine after each dose to circulate the medicinal qi.
*Zuanling Ji* method for boiling White Quartz in a silver pot.
White Quartz (five da liang). *Note: The silver pot should have many small holes in the bottom and sides to allow heat penetration without burning the stone.*
Place the stone in the silver pot (capacity approx. one small sheng). Drill small holes throughout the bottom and two rows near the bottom on the sides. Place in an iron cauldron with water... [Text fragment] ... Same as Meng Shijun of Tongzhou's method for taking stone.
Method for taking stone.
One jin of coarse White Quartz, crushed to the size of sour jujube pits. Not necessarily pure white pieces. First, grind in a sand pan with coarse gravel and a little water for two to three thousand strokes. Wash clean. Grind again with sand for one to two thousand strokes. Wash clean until smooth. Place in a double-layered silk bag. When traveling or at home, place on the bed facing the door. Every morning before grooming, take seven pieces, hold in mouth, swallow with wine or water, one piece at a time, seven swallows total, guiding them down to the lower abdomen. Press down with two spoonfuls of rice. Resume normal diet. No taboos regarding death, filth, white wine, or beef; all traditional stone-takers' taboos are waived. The reason for careful grinding to smoothness is to prevent sharp fragments from injuring the gastrointestinal tract and causing ulcers. There is no other concern. Take daily before grooming. Avoid extreme cold and heat. By mid-morning, the old stone will pass, replaced by the new one. Resume normal meals. If feeling weak, take seven pieces before dinner, swallowing as before, keeping them in the lower abdomen overnight until feet feel warm. Next morning, the old stone passes. Follow morning and evening methods. The stone remains in the lower abdomen, attached to the "granary gate" (lower abdomen), keeping it warm. Within the limbs, bladder, head, eyes, marrow, brain, skin, and body, there is originally no "stone qi"; if pathology arises, where does it come from? Men and women often have accumulated cold. If the lower part is hot, the upper must be cold. If both are cold, appetite fails, leading to Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst) and death. If both are hot, sores appear on head/face, lips dry, eyes red, limbs emaciated, skin floats, leading quickly to Gu Zheng (Bone Steaming consumption). One must harmonize cold and heat in the Upper and Lower Jiao, ensuring meridians are unblocked. Upper heat and lower cold indicate chronic accumulation. After taking stone, lower heat naturally rises, upper cold resolves, bone qi becomes solid, waist and kidneys strengthen, and myriad diseases are eliminated. If ineffective, continue taking ten jin; if effective, stop after one jin.
Three methods for steaming Quartz in mutton and eating pork with stone juice or ginger-soy sauce.
Method for steaming Quartz in mutton.
Lean mutton (one jin), White Quartz (three liang).
Split the meat into two parts, drill holes, insert the stone, reassemble. Wrap in lotus leaf, then wax paper, then cloth. Steam in a rice cooker until rice is cooked. Remove, take out the stone, slice meat finely. Make small wontons with scallions, pepper, and ginger. Boil. Swallow one hundred wontons on an empty stomach in cool starch water in the morning. Press down with cold rice. No taboos. Best in spring and summer; the stone will never cause adverse reactions. Do not break the wontons. The three liang of stone can be reused until changed.
Another method for eating pork in stone juice.
White Quartz (one da liang).
Place in a silk bag, boil in three dou of water to extract four sheng. Remove stone. Cut one jin of pork finely. Cook with pepper, scallions, salt, and fermented soybeans as usual. Take as desired. Repeat every ten days, crushing the stone for re-boiling. No taboos; very effective.
Another method for making ginger-soy sauce with Quartz juice.
