[Pathogenesis] In summer, when the weather is hot, people often travel on roads. Heat-toxin enters the interior and combines with the five Zang organs. The pathogenic factors from outside are vigorous and excessive, leading to stagnation and blood stasis that cannot be dispersed. This causes a sudden termination of Yin Qi and a violent congestion of Yang Qi, resulting in blocked meridians and collaterals. Consequently, the patient suddenly faints and becomes unconscious, which is called "Zhong Re Si" (Heat Stroke Death / Sunstroke Collapse). However, this is caused by the attack of external pathogens, and the true Zang Qi has not been destroyed. If timely rescue is provided, allowing the Qi mechanism to be unblocked... (From Volume 23)
*Zhouhou Beiji Fang* (Emergency Prescriptions Kept in the Sleeve) methods for treating death due to heat stroke in summer. For those who die from heat stroke, they must not be allowed to come into contact with cold; contact with cold will cause death. Treatment methods include:
Wrap a curved leather belt around the patient's umbilicus. Have three or four persons urinate into it to keep it warm. Alternatively, use mud and bent grass as a cushion for warmth. One can also place a inverted clay bowl bottom or a removed chariot wheel on the patient's umbilicus, moistening the mud with human urine to make it warm.
Another prescription:
Moxibustion on both nipples, seven moxa cones each. (Same as *Qianjin Fang*)
Another prescription:
Take dust heated by the sun on the road, pile it over the heart region (Xin Xia), more is better. Replace if it cools down, aiming to promote the flow of Qi. (Same as *Qianjin Fang*)
Another prescription:
Crush Calamus Rhizome (Shi Chang Pu) to extract juice, and administer one to two sheng to the patient.
All these treatments for heat stroke death originate from methods established by Zhang Zhongjing. Their principles are profound and extraordinary, hardly understandable by common sense, and beyond what Materia Medica texts can enlighten upon. They are truly great arts for saving lives. In the field of Cold Damage (Shang Han), there is another condition called "Han Jue" (Cold Reversal/Cold Extremities), discussed by Zhang Zhongjing in ancient times, which is distinct from this "Zhong Re Si" (Heat Stroke Death) caused by exposure to heat. (Wen Zhong agrees, from *Qianjin Fang* treating Heat Jue prescriptions.)
The patient may drink hot water decoction. Alternatively, boil small amounts of Dried Ginger (Gan Jiang), Tangerine Peel (Ju Pi), and Licorice Root (Gan Cao) to make a decoction. Swallow it slowly, do not drink until full. It is best to cover the patient with hot earth and hot ash soil. (Same as *Gu Jin Lu Yan*)
Wen Zhong's method for treating summer heat stroke death.
Boil Polygonum Multiflorum Vine Juice (Liao Zhi) thickly, and instill three sheng. If not recovered, instill again. (Same as *Zhouhou Fang* and *Qianjin Fang*)
*Gu Jin Lu Yan* method for treating Heat Jue.
Have the person breathe onto the anterior chest to warm it up, rotating persons to do so. (Same as *Zhouhou Fang*)
Pathogenesis: When a person is thrown into water and drowns, water enters through the orifices and floods the Fu organs, causing Qi blockage, leading to death. If rescued early, drain the water to allow Qi and Blood to circulate, and life can be restored. It is also stated that even after half a day or one day, treatment is still possible. If vital Qi has ceased but the epigastrium remains warm, survival is still possible. (From Volume 2)
*Zhouhou Fang* method for treating drowning victims who have been dead for a night, yet may still survive.
Take powder of Gleditsia Sinensis Fruit (Zao Jiao Mo), wrap it in silk, and insert it into the lower orifice (anus). After a short while, if water comes out, the patient will live. (Same as *Gu Jin Lu Yan*)
Another prescription:
Hang the body upside down and undress. Pick out dirt from the umbilicus. Blow forcefully into both ears. The patient will live. (Same as *Ji Yan Fang*, *Qianjin Fang*, *Duan Ju Fang*, *Wen Zhong*, *Bei Ji Fang*)
Another prescription:
Hang the deceased upside down. Instill good wine into the nose. Immediate recovery occurs. (Same as *Qianjin Fang*, *Bei Ji Fang*, *Wen Zhong*, *Gu Jin Lu Yan*)
Another prescription:
Take a large earthenware jar and invert it. Place the deceased prone over the mouth of the jar, aligning the mouth with the jar's opening. Burn fourteen bundles of reed fire under the part of the jar corresponding to the deceased's heart, causing smoke to rise slightly into the deceased's nose and mouth. When water flows out from the nose and mouth, the patient lives. Add more reeds when exhausted, continuing until revival. Frequently check the body and the jar with hands; do not let the jar become too wet, replace if wet.
*Duan Ju Fang* method for treating drowning where the body is still warm.
Take more than two dan of ash from the stove to bury the person, covering from head to toe. When water flows out from the seven orifices, the patient lives. (Same as *Bei Ji Qian Jin Fang* and *Zhouhou Fang*)
Another prescription:
Remove a heating pot (Fu) and invert it on the ground. Place the drowning victim prone on top of it. When water drains from the abdomen, the patient lives. (Same as *Zhouhou Fang*, also from Volume 10)
*Qianjin Fang* method for treating death by falling into water.
Spread ash from the stove on the ground, thickness of five cun. Place a steamer basket (Zeng) on its side on the ash. Place the deceased on the steamer, with the head slightly hanging down. Take two fang cun bi of fried salt, put it in a tube, and blow it into the orifice. The patient should vomit water. Once water drains, remove the steamer, place the deceased in the ash to wrap the body, and expel water from the nose and mouth. The patient will live.
Another prescription:
Dig a pit, roast several hu of ash in the pit. Place the deceased in the pit and cover with ash. Replace the ash when it becomes wet. Do not let the ash be too hot to scald the body; replace when it cools. Revival occurs within half a day.
*Bei Ji Fang* method for treating drowning.
Bend the deceased's legs and place them on the shoulders of a living person. Position the deceased's back against the living person. Carry and run with the deceased. When water is vomited out, the patient lives. (*Zhouhou Fang* notes this also treats freezing to death. Same as *Qianjin Fang*, *Zhouhou Fang*, *Wen Zhong*, *Ji Yan Fang*, *Duan Ju Fang*, *Gu Jin Lu Yan*, from Volume 8)
