Shen Shi's formula treats death caused by "ghostly entities." The illness transmits among people, causing confusion between dreams and waking states, emaciation, alternating chills and fever, silent irritability, desire to sleep but inability to do so, heat in the hands and feet, anorexia, sometimes weeping facing the wall, or laughing without reason. Niu Huang San (Cattle Gallstone Powder) Formula:
Niu Huang (Rheae Calculus, ground) Gu Jian Yu (Ardisiae Japonicae Caulis et Folium) Wang Bu Liu Xing (Vaccariae Semen) Xu Chang Qing (Cynanchi Atrati Radix), also known as Gui Du You (Ghost Supervisor General) Yuan Zhi (Polygalae Radix, heart removed) Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata)

The *Bing Yuan* (Source of Diseases) commentary states that "Zhu" means "to stay," indicating lingering and stagnation. A person who previously had no other illness may suddenly be struck by ghostly pathogens, experiencing sudden stabbing pain in the heart and abdomen, or fainting and collapsing, similar to Zhong E (sudden evil invasion). After recovery, residual qi remains, stagnating and accumulating over time. It may flare up intermittently, lingering and stagnating until death. After death, the pathogenic qi transfers to others, hence called Gui Zhu (Ghost Zhu). (From Volume 24)
Gu Jin Lu Yan Shen Mi Wan (Ancient and Modern Recorded Mysterious Pill) treats Gui Zhu (Ghost Zhu), evil clashes, Fei Shi (Flying Corpse), Zhu Ji (Zhu Strike), dog/marrow bites, and bee/snake stings, eliminating all of them.
