[Etiology] Blood and Qi (Vital Energy) are the substances that nourish the body. In patients with deficiency consumption (Xu Lao), the essence and marrow are withered and exhausted, and blood and qi are weak, failing to fill the muscles and skin; therefore, the body becomes emaciated and the complexion is poor.
[Prevention and Care] "Yu Quan" (Jade Spring) refers to saliva in the mouth. Before getting up in the morning, rinse the mouth first, then swallow the saliva, followed by clenching the teeth fourteen times (two sets of seven). Repeat this three times and then stop.
[Formula 1] From *Guangji*, a formula for treating emaciation. Symptoms include tidal fever (redness) every evening, soreness and pain in the hands and feet, dry mouth, and high fever. Otter Liver Pill Formula:
Otter Liver (6 fen, roasted) Tianlinggai (Burned skull cap, 4 fen) Raw Rhinoceros Horn (4 fen, crushed) Qianhu (4 fen) Shengma (4 fen)
Songzhi (5 fen)
The above eight ingredients are pounded and sifted, mixed with honey, and formed into pills the size of mulberry seeds. Take twenty pills on an empty stomach, administered with fermented soybean juice soaked in urine. Take twice daily. If bowel movements become unobstructed (normal), discontinue. Avoid eating kelp, Chinese cabbage (Songcai), raw green onions, hot noodles, roasted meat, fish, garlic, sticky foods, and stale or rancid foods.
[Formula 2] Another formula for treating emaciation:
Tianlinggai (1 da liang, roasted) She Xiang (Half umbilical amount) Tao Ren (1 da chao, peeled) Zhu Sha (1.5 da liang, select bright ones) Hao Chi (1 da sheng, dried)
The above five ingredients are each separately pounded and sifted, then thoroughly mixed together. Every morning on an empty stomach, mix one cun bi (a square-inch measure) of the powder with half a sheng of urine and take it orally. Discontinue once the illness resolves after one dose. If bowel movements become unobstructed, discontinue. Avoid eating raw blood products.
[Formula 3] Another formula for treating abdominal distension, emaciation, and loss of appetite:
Chaihu Fuling (each 12 fen) Zhishi (roasted) Baizhu Renshen Maimendong (decored) Shengjiang (with peel, sliced, each 6 fen)
The above seven ingredients are chopped. Boil in six sheng of water until reduced to one sheng and eight he. Strain out the dregs. Divide into three warm doses. The interval between doses should be equivalent to the time it takes to walk seven or eight li. Take one dose. If bowel movements become unobstructed, discontinue. Avoid eating raw/cold foods, greasy foods, adzuki beans, sticky foods, peaches, plums, vinegar-based foods, sparrow meat, etc.
[Formula 4] Zhimu Pill, primarily for treating emaciation, as well as chronic jaundice and other conditions:
Zhimu Changshan (each 3 da liang) Gancao (roasted) Dahuang Mahuang (nodes removed) Huangqin Xingren (each 2 da liang, remove tips and skins, stir-fried)
Shuqi (washed) Muli (each 1 da liang, stir-fried)
The above nine ingredients are pounded and sifted, mixed with honey, and formed into pills the size of mulberry seeds. Take on an empty stomach, swallowing seven pills with water. Avoid eating pork, green onions, alcohol, and wheat flour products. If heart palpitations or stuffiness occur after taking the medicine, vomiting will ensue; this is the expulsion reaction of this disease. (This formula was transmitted from Duke Ying by Zhang Wenzhong.)
[Formula 5] Emergency formula for treating wasting diseases:
Gancao (3 da liang, roasted)
Every morning, boil Gancao in urine for a few boiling points, and take it all at once. This is very effective. Avoid eating kelp and Chinese cabbage. (Included in Volume II)
