The *Zhouhou Beiji Fang* (Emergency Prescriptions Kept in the Sleeve) method for treating pit viper bites.
Guixin (Cinnamon Twig Heart), Gualou (Trichosanthes Fruit).
Grind the above two herbs into equal parts powder, seal tightly in a small bamboo tube for portable storage. If bitten suddenly by a pit viper, apply the powder immediately to the wound. This medicine treats various snake venoms; if not sealed tightly, the medicinal qi will dissipate and it will be ineffective. (Wen Zhong's record is identical.)
Another prescription:
Urgently dig a pit in the ground, bury the bitten area within it, and compact the soil firmly on top. The toxin will seep into the earth. After a short while, when the pain subsides, remove the limb and slowly treat with medicine.
Another prescription:
Crush small garlic and squeeze out the juice. Drink the juice and apply the dregs as a poultice over the wound.
Another prescription:
Take earwax from a pig's ear and place it into the injured wound. Yellow fluid should discharge, leading to recovery. Earwax from a cow's ear can also be used effectively.
Another prescription:
Chew salt and spit saliva onto the wound. Perform moxibustion with three cones (zhuang). Then chew more salt and spit saliva onto the wound again.
The *Beiji Qianjin Yaofang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold for Emergencies) method for treating pit viper bites.
Burn centipede until charred, grind into powder, and apply to the wound. Effective. (Identical to *Zhouhou Beiji Fang*.)
Another prescription:
Mix beeswax and honey in equal proportions. Melt and blend them in a cauldron. Place a jointless bamboo tube over the wound and fill the tube with the wax-honey mixture, allowing it to penetrate deep into the wound until healed. If honey is unavailable, using only beeswax is also acceptable.
Another prescription:
Urgently urinate into the wound. Then, holding a knife facing the sun, hold your breath and take three steps. Use the knife to dig a small pit in the ground. Pour hot water into the pit, then take the mud and form three pills the size of sophora seeds. Ingest one pill and apply a small amount of mud to the wound. (Identical to *Zhouhou Beiji Fang*.)

Xixin (Asarum), Xionghuang (Realgar).
Place equal parts of the above two herbs into the wound. Apply three to four times daily. Also effective for wounds caused by various snakes and tigers.
It is further stated that: The pit viper has a short body, a flat head, and a pointed mouth. It has spots on its head and red patterns on its body, though some are greenish-black. When encountered, it presses its belly flat against the ground. They are abundant in the mountains of the eastern region, and their venom is the most potent. One must be extremely cautious when walking through grass. There is another type resembling a pit viper but shorter, with four legs, capable of jumping to bite humans. Eastern people call this "Thousand-Year Viper." Bites from this snake are invariably fatal. However, after biting, it jumps into trees or bushes, making a sound like "yan mu, yan mu" (grinding wood), which implies preparing a coffin for itself.
