Disease Etiology: This refers to the current condition of "Chi Bai Zhi Xia" (dysentery with red and white discharge), causing pain and heaviness in the lower body, hence named "Zhong Xia" (Heavy Lower). It involves passing pus and blood resembling egg whites, occurring dozens of times a day, accompanied by periumbilical pain. (From Volume 17)
*Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang* (Emergency Prescriptions Kept Up My Sleeve) for treating Zhong Xia:
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, one sheng)
Take the above single herb, boil in five sheng of wine until reduced to one and a half sheng. Divide into two doses and take warm. When mild cramping pain occurs at the umbilicus, the disease will heal.
Another Prescription:
Shuwei Cao (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Herba / Sage Herb)
Take the above single herb, decoct strongly until it resembles thin malt syrup. Take five ge to one sheng per dose, three times daily. For red dysentery, use the red-flowered variety; for white dysentery, use the white-flowered variety, which is optimal. (Same as *Wenzhong Beiji*)
*Wenzhong Yinju Xiaoyan Fang* (Prescriptions of Wenzhong's Recluse Efficacy), primarily for lower abdominal cramping pain, Zhong Xia, and passage of red and white discharge:
Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) (each two liang)
Crush and sieve the above four herbs. Decoct with juice from dark plums (Wumei). Take one cun bi (a measure roughly equivalent to a tablespoon) per dose, three times daily. If there is severe abdominal cramping, add Danggui; if passing red discharge, add Huanglian; if passing white discharge, add Ganjiang. Highly effective and miraculous; keep secret. (Also found in Volume 3 of *Beiji*)
*Beiji Fang* (Emergency Prescriptions) for treating Zhong Xia: This is precisely Chi Bai Li Xia (dysentery with red and white stool), causing pain and heaviness in the lower body, hence named Zhong Xia. (*Ge Shi Fang*)
Chidou (Fermented Soybean, roasted until slightly charred)
Crush the above single herb. Take one ge per dose, administered multiple times daily. Alternatively, roast the fermented soybeans until charred, pour one sheng of water over them to extract the juice, and drink. If cold, use wine to extract the juice. Take three times daily. (Same as *Zhou Hou* and *Wenzhong*, found in Volume 6)
*Gujin Luyan* for treating Zhong Xia with red discharge:
Obtain the red feces of a otter (Lacha). (For white discharge, obtain white feces and calcine into powder)
Take the above single herb. Drink one small cup on an empty stomach in the early morning. Drink for three consecutive mornings, and the disease will be cured.
Another prescription for treating Zhong Xia with red and white discharge and cramping pain following a toxic disease:
Shizhongru (Gypsum Fibrosum, one liang, ground), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), Shujiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium, processed to remove oil/sweat), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) (each two liang)
Cut the above eight herbs. Boil in six sheng of water until reduced to two and a half sheng. Divide into three doses. Take at a comfortable temperature. (All from Volume 10)
