In the etiology, the symptom of "Feng Ye" (Wind Dragging) refers to flaccidity and inability to control the limbs. The human body relies on Stomach Qi (Stomach Energy) to nourish the muscles and meridians. If Stomach Qi is weak or damaged, its energy becomes insufficient. Insufficient energy leads to deficiency in the meridians; deficiency in the meridians leads to laxity and slackness of the muscles and sinews. Therefore, when Wind Pathogen (Wind Evil) combats with the sinews, it results in flaccidity and loss of control of the limbs. (From Volume 1)
Fan Wang's prescription for treating Zhong Feng (Stroke/Wind Stroke) resulting in inability to rise, which expels water, aids digestion, regulates the Stomach, and directs Qi downward:
Herbs: Stemona Root (Baibu, 4 fen), Aconite Root (Wutou, processed), Achyranthes Root (Niuxi), Atractylodes Rhizome (Baizhu, each 1 fen).
The above four herbs are crushed and sifted. Take one cubic inch spoonful (fang cun bi) with wine, three times daily. Gradually increase the dose up to three spoonfuls for good effect. Avoid pork, cold water, plums, and peaches. (From Volume 20)
"Gujin Luyan" treats Feng Yi (Wind Obscuration) causing inability to speak, inability to control the four limbs, and spasms of hands and feet, using the Du Huo Decoction:
Herbs: Angelicae Pubescentis Radix (Du Huo, 4 liang), Fresh Ginger (Sheng Jiang, 6 liang), Licorice Root (Gan Cao, roasted), Cinnamon Twig (Gui Xin), Pueraria Root (Ge Gen), Peony Root (Shao Yao), Trichosanthes Fruit (Gua Lou, each 2 liang).
The above seven herbs are chopped. Boil in five sheng of water until three sheng remain. Take one sheng per dose, three times daily. Avoid Seaweed (Haizao), Chinese Cabbage (Song Cai), and raw Scallion (Sheng Cong). (From Volume 4)
In the etiology, when both Blood and Qi are deficient, Wind Pathogen enters together. When invading the Yang aspect, the skin becomes flaccid; when invading the Yin aspect, the abdominal interior becomes tense. The presentation of Rou Feng (Soft Wind) is characterized by external skin flaccidity and internal abdominal tension, inability to voluntarily control the four limbs, abdominal tension with difficulty in extending the breath. This is the syndrome of Rou Feng. (From Volume 1)
"Shen Shi Fang" treats Rou Feng with body pain and profuse white sweat, using Shih Gao San (Gypsum Powder):
Herbs: Gypsum Fibrosum (Shi Gao, 2 liang, ground), Licorice Root (Gan Cao, 1 liang, roasted).
The above two herbs are crushed and sifted into a powder. Take one cubic inch spoonful with wine, can be taken for seven doses. (From Volume 9)
"Gujin Luyan" treats Zhong Rou Feng (Internal Soft Wind) with body pain, flaccidity and weakness of the four limbs resembling paralysis. For postpartum Rou Feng, this same formula, named Du Huo Ge Gen Tang (Angelica Pubescens and Pueraria Decoction), is also used:
Herbs: Notopterygium Rhizome (Qiang Huo), Cinnamon Twig (Gui Xin), Rehmannia Root (Shu Di Huang), Pueraria Root (Ge Gen), Peony Root (Shao Yao, each 3 liang), Fresh Ginger (Sheng Jiang, 6 liang), Ephedra Stem (Mahuang, de-segmented), Licorice Root (Gan Cao, roasted, each 2 liang).
The above eight herbs are chopped. Boil in three sheng of clear wine and five sheng of water until three sheng remain. Take warm five he, three times daily. Avoid raw Scallion, Elaeagnus Fruit (Wuyi), Seaweed, and Chinese Cabbage. (Same as Fan Wang's, From Volume 8)
