Cui's Deer Horn Powder Formula.
Take deer horns three to four cun in length, cut them, then roast them once at the bottom of a cooking stove. Remove the loose and impure center parts, and scrape off the black skin completely. Then, pound into powder, sift through silk gauze.
Mix with water, wrap the horn powder in four or five layers of boiled silk cloth, twist into balls of any size. Roast thoroughly in charcoal fire, remove from fire to cool, then crush into powder again. Mix with water once more, wrap in four or five layers of boiled silk cloth, twist into balls. Repeat this roasting, pounding, and crushing process four or five times, always mixing with water. Afterwards, repeat three times mixing with cow's milk. Roasting and pounding follow the previous method exactly. Crush finely, grind into powder using a jade pestle in a porcelain vessel. Mixing this with Peach Blossom Powder is excellent.
Another Peach Blossom Powder Formula.
Guangming Sha (Bright Cinnabar), Xionghuang (Realgar), Xunhuang (Orpiment) (all ground into powder), Zhenzhu Mo (Pearl Powder), Yingfen (Eagle Droppings), Shanhu (Coral), Yunmu Fen (Mica Powder), Shexiang (Musk) (use Dangmenzi part).
Lujiao Fen (Deer Horn Powder) (any amount, equal parts for all ingredients).
Grind these nine ingredients finely; finer is better. The exact proportion of Deer Horn Powder within this mixture is not critical.
Qianjin Wet Incense Formula.
Chenxiang (Agarwood) (3 fen), Linglingxiang (Lingling Fragrance), KT Xiang, Shexiang (Musk) (6 fen each), Xunluxiang (Frankincense) (1 fen), Dingzixiang (Clove) (2 fen).
Jiaxiang (Turtle Shell Fragrance) (0.5 fen, washed with water and decocted), Gansongxiang (Sweet Flag) (2 fen), Tanxiang (Sandalwood) (1 fen), Huoxiang (Patchouli) (2 fen).
Coarsely pound these ten ingredients and sieve. Mix with honey, roast in earthenware, to produce wet incense for fumigating clothes. (From Volume 6)
Qianjin Yi Fumigating Clothes Wet Incense Formula.
Xunluxiang (Frankincense) (8 liang), Zhantangxiang (Gum Elemi), Lantan, Huoxiang (Patchouli) (3 liang each), Jiaxiang (Turtle Shell Fragrance) (2 liang), Qingguipi (Green Cinnamon Bark) (5 liang).
For these six ingredients, first select the hard, sticky, and difficult-to-crush parts. Pound or cut them finely into sizes resembling millet grains. Spread two thin layers on a plate. Pound the remaining ingredients separately and sieve them over the plate using gauze that is not too fine. Decoct honey separately. On the plate, knead by hand until uniform, then pound further. The dryness and moisture must be balanced appropriately. Too dry makes pill-making difficult; too wet makes burning difficult. If it burns out too quickly, the fragrance does not emit well; if it is hard to burn, there is much smoke. Excessive smoke results only in scorched odor, losing the fragrance. Therefore, the incense must have appropriate coarseness and moisture content, the honey must match the incense quantity, and the fire must be mild, allowing the incense and green smoke to burn out together. (From Volume 5)
Beiji Six-Ingredient Fumigating Clothes Incense Formula.
Chenxiang (Agarwood), Shexiang (Musk) (1 liang), Suhexiang (Styrax) (1.5 liang), Dingxiang (Clove) (2 liang), Jiaxiang (Turtle Shell Fragrance) (1 liang, washed with wine, coated with honey, lightly roasted), Baijiaoxiang (White Styrax Resin) (1 liang).
Pound the Chenxiang (Agarwood) until broken into pieces the size of soybeans. Pound the Dingxiang (Clove) similarly. Pound the other fragrances, mix with honey to make pills, and burn. For fumigating clothes, adding Bina Xiang (Borneo Camphor) half a liang is beneficial.
Another Prescription
Chenxiang (Agarwood) (9 liang), Baitanxiang (White Sandalwood) (1 liang), Shexiang (Musk) (2 liang, mixed and pounded together), Dingxiang (Clove) (1 liang 2 zhu), Suhexiang (Styrax) (1 liang).
Jiaxiang (Turtle Shell Fragrance) (2 liang, washed with wine as before), Xunluxiang (Frankincense) (1 liang 2 zhu, mixed and pounded), Gansongxiang (Sweet Flag) (1 liang, pounded separately).
Mix these eight ingredients with honey, store in a bottle, bury underground for twenty days. Take out, form into pills for fumigating clothes.
Another Fumigating Clothes Incense Formula.
Chenshui Xiang (Aquilaria Wood) (1 jin, chopped and soaked in wine overnight), KT Xiang (5 liang, use chicken bone variety), Jiaxiang (Turtle Shell Fragrance) (2 liang, washed with wine), Suhexiang (Styrax) (1 liang, optional if unavailable), Shexiang (Musk) (1 liang), Dingxiang (Clove) (1.5 liang), Baitanxiang (White Sandalwood) (1 liang, ground separately).
Pound these seven ingredients to the size of small beans and mix. Sieve the Shexiang (Musk) through a fine sieve, add to the mixture to blend. Store in a sealed container, seal for three days before use; seven days is even better. To fumigate clothes, first lay them on moist ground to dampen them. Place in a cage and burn frequently; three da is optimal. Place the fire stick under the cage, set a bowl of water nearby. After burning, stop fumigation and place the clothes in a large chest to seal them. After two or three nights, repeat the process over the areas previously treated. Even after removal, the fragrance will persist for half a day. This formula was decreed and bestowed during the Zhenguan era.
