According to the *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Symptoms of All Diseases) regarding jaundice: This disease arises from excessive consumption of alcohol and food, leading to disharmony among the Zang-Fu organs. The Qi of water and grain clumps together and accumulates in the Spleen and Stomach. Subsequently, it is constrained by Wind-Dampness pathogens, resulting in stasis and binding that fails to dissipate. Heat qi stagnates and steams, causing symptoms such as feeling hungry immediately after eating, yellowing of the body, face, nails, and urine, and a desire to lie still. If the pulse colors manifest predominantly as red, black, or blue, there will inevitably be alternating chills and fever, body pain, a slightly yellow complexion, yellow dental calculus, and yellow nails; this is jaundice. Jaundice accompanied by thirst indicates a difficult-to-treat condition, while jaundice without thirst indicates a treatable condition. When the disease originates in the Yin aspect, vomiting will occur; when it originates in the Yang aspect, shivering chills with fever will occur. (From Volume 12)
Jaundice (Huang Dan) from Zhang Zhongjing's *Shanghan Lun*. The formula for treating this is Mahuang Chunjiu Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Mellow Wine Decoction).
Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) (one large handful, nodes removed)
Take the above single herb, add five sheng of clear wine, decoct until two and a half sheng remain, filter out the dregs, and take all at once. Ancient and modern formulas state that for jaundice caused by heat escaping the exterior in Shanghan, sweating is appropriate for cure. In winter, use wine; in spring, decocting with water is excellent. (Consistent with *Duanju*, *Gujin Luyan*, Zhang Wenzhong, and *Jingxinlu*)
Another prescription for jaundice. The formula for treating this is Yinchenshao Wuling San (Artemisia Scoparia and Five-Ingredient Powder for Promoting Urination).
Yinchenshao powder (Ten parts) Wuling San (Five parts)
Mix the above two ingredients. Before meals, mix with plain rice water and administer one Fangcunbi (a measuring spoon) per dose, three times daily. (Consistent with *Shenshi* and *Fan Wang*)
Additionally, Wuling San promotes urination and treats jaundice.
Zhuling (Polyporus) (Three parts, skin removed) Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (Three parts) Fuling (Poria) (Three parts) Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) (Five parts) Guixin (Cinnamomi Ramulus) (Two parts)
Crush and sieve the above five herbs, and mix well. Mix with plain rice water and administer one Fangcunbi per dose, three times daily. Drink plenty of warm water afterward to assist the medicinal action; sweating indicates recovery. (Consistent with *Qianjin*, *Shenshi*, and *Fan Wang*, all from Volume 14)
The *Zhouhou Beiji Fang* (Emergency Prescriptions Kept Up My Sleeve) treatment for jaundice.
Burn human hair (Lu Fa), administer one Fangcunbi per dose, three times daily. Secretly verified as effective. Can be taken with wine or water. (Consistent with *Beiji* and Wenzhong, from Volume 1)
The *Fan Wang Fang* treatment for jaundice powder.
Take the white pith and seeds of a bottle gourd (Hu Zi), roast until yellow, crush into powder. Administer half a Qianbi (a small measuring spoon) per dose, once daily. Recovery occurs within ten days. Note that using bottle gourd may induce vomiting; consideration should be given beforehand. (From Volume 34)
The *Jiyan Fang* (Collected Proven Prescriptions) treatment for jaundice refractory to hundred medicines.
One donkey head, boiled thoroughly. Consume with ginger vinegar relish, and drink the broth according to appetite. (Consistent with *Beiji*, Cui Shi, Zhang Wenzhong, and *Gujin Luyan*, from Volume 2)
The *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) treatment for jaundice.
Take fresh wheat seedlings (Xiao Mai Miao), crush them, and squeeze out the juice. Drink six or seven ge (a liquid measure) per dose, divided into three or four doses day and night. Recovery occurs in three to four days. If wheat seedlings are unavailable, barley seedlings (Mai Miao) are also acceptable. *Fan Wang* states that using wheat itself is superior. (Consistent with *Beiji*, Wenzhong, and *Jiyan*, from Volume 10)
The *Qianjin Yi Fang* (Supplement to Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) treatment for persistent jaundice with yellow eyes: Guding San (Melon Seed Powder).
Grind Guding (likely melon seeds or similar) finely to the size of soybeans. Insert into the nostrils. Instruct the patient to inhale deeply so that yellow fluid discharges.
Additionally, Huangzheng Tang (Yellow Fermentation Soup):
Huangzheng (Yellow fermented dough) (One sheng) Mai mian (Wheat flour) (One sheng) Zhushi (Porci Excrement) (One sheng)
Soak the above three ingredients in five sheng of water overnight. Decoct until three sheng remain, filter out dregs, and take one sheng at once. Cover up to induce sweating; this is certain to be effective. (From Volume 18)
Cui Shi's treatment for jaundice in patients over sixty years old.
Maogen (Imperatae Rhizoma) (One handful) Zhu rou (Porcine Meat) (One jin)
Cook the above two ingredients together into a soup. One dose leads to recovery. Additionally, moxa should be applied to points one and a half cun above and below the umbilicus, one hundred moxa cones each side; and to the Yuji point (Lung 10) on the thenar eminence, applying moxa cones equal to the patient's age. (Consistent with *Beiji* and *Fan Wang*)
Another treatment for jaundice.
Ku Hulu rang (Bitter bottle gourd pith), size of a large date.
Soak this single ingredient in two he of child's urine for about two to three meal periods. Extract juice equivalent to two sour jujubes, and instill into both nostrils. Other precautions are the same as the previous formula. It has been commonly used recently and is considered superior to Gudi San.
The *Jinxiao Fang* (Near-Efficacy Prescriptions) treatment for jaundice: Gudi San (Momordica Seed Powder).
Gudi (Momordicae Fructus) (Fourteen pieces) Chixiaodou (Vigna Semen Rubrum) (Seven pieces) Sheng Shumi (Sorghum Bicolor Grain, raw) (Fourteen pieces) Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos) (Fourteen pieces)
Crush and sieve the above four herbs. For severe cases, take pills the size of soybeans (two pills); place one pill in each nostril. Pain and nasal contraction will occur. After a moment, clear yellow water will drip from the nose, or more than one sheng may discharge from the mouth, indicating recovery. For mild cases, the size of a small red bean is sufficient. If not cured after one application, repeat frequently every other day. Li Hao used this and saw immediate results. However, laypeople sometimes force air into the nose with bamboo tubes, which can be fatal; exercise caution.
Another treatment for male and female jaundice where medical treatment has failed, presenting with total yellowing of the body and eyes, indigestion, stomach distension and heat producing a "yellow coating," caused by dry feces in the stomach.
Use one sheng of prepared lard (Cheng Jian Zhu Zhi). Warm and take all at once, three times daily. Recovery occurs upon the passage of dry feces. (Consistent with *Beiji* and Cui Shi)
