Mulberry bark (Morus albae Cortex), fine tea (Camelliae Sinensis Folium), fresh ginger (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), and locust tree bark (Styphnolobii Japonici Cortex) are crushed together. Mixed with clarified oil, stir-fried, and applied as a compress to the affected area. If the kidneys are red and swollen, take the juice from indigo dye residue (Indigo Naturalis) and apply Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis Powder) topically. For wind-induced swelling, use salt heated in a pan for moxibustion-like warming therapy. Alternatively, apply fried sophora flower leaves (Sophorae Flos et Folium) as a hot compress.

The croak of a male duck applied several times will reduce the swelling.

Realgar (Realgar) is ground into powder, mixed evenly with clarified oil, and applied using duck feathers.

Fine tea is chewed until soft, wrapped in paper, and applied to the umbilicus. Additionally, camphor tree bark (Cinnamomi Camphorae Cortex), ginger, scallion, and aged mugwort are crushed, stir-fried until hot, and placed on the lower abdomen to promote unblocking.

A handful of scallions is crushed into a cake and applied to the umbilicus. A tin pot filled with boiling water is used to warm the scallion cake, promoting unblocking. When a woman develops smallpox and menstruation (Tian Gui) suddenly starts with monthly bleeding, decoct the plant including stems and leaves, and smear the liquid over the entire body.

If a pregnant woman develops smallpox accompanied by abdominal pain and fetal movement, grind motherwort herb (Leonuri Herba), lotus seedpod shell (Nelumbinis Nuciferae Pericarpium), and mugwort leaf (Artemisiae Argyi Folium) after burning them to retain their properties. Mix the powder with vinegar and apply to the umbilicus, changing it three times consecutively.

For severe smallpox toxicity or stifled smallpox, where after three to four days there is extreme danger with blood in stool and urine: Find at least 40-50 live toads (Bufo bufo gargarizans). Remove all clothing from the infant, cover them with a blanket, and place them in a lateral position. Gently pile the toads on the upper and lower back, arranging them down to the lower body. The warmth from the infant causes the toads to naturally press their heads against the infant's body. The infant absorbs toad venom (Chan Su), which opens the orifices, allowing the smallpox eruptions to emerge naturally. Do not disturb; after one day and night, remove the toads to resolve the smallpox toxin. Do not harm them. In winter, toads can be found under sun-facing mulberry trees by digging.

Willow leaves (Salicis Tenuifoliae Folium), kumquat leaves (Fortunellae Obovatae Folium), aged mugwort leaves (Artemisiae Argyi Folium), and wax tree leaves (Rhus Verniciferae Folium) are decocted in water. Washing the entire body with this solution reduces the eruption. Alternatively, mix clarified oil (one cup) with cinnabar juice (Cinnabaris) and realgar (Realgar), heat the mixture, and wipe it from head to toe. This causes miscellaneous pustules to recede and regular smallpox lesions to appear.

For smallpox symptoms involving fever, delirium, and incoherent speech: Crush Qianjiao Ni (a type of mud/earth), mix with egg white (Galli Ovallis Albumen), and apply to the umbilicus. Alternatively, mix indigo dye residue juice (one cup) with swallow mud (Hirundinis Nidus) and apply to the umbilicus. Alternatively, cut open a young rooster (one), coat the inside with realgar and sesame oil, and apply the chicken to the umbilicus; this method is very stable.
