Dip rush pith (Jiedain) in clear oil and apply to moisten the eyes. Alternatively, grind Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai, 黄柏) into powder, soak in water for a long time. Wet paper with the infusion and lay it on the eyelids. Mix Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 黄连) powder with Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen, 人参) milk, steam it over rice, and wipe the affected area. Or chew soybeans into a paste and apply as a poultice. One may also use one's own warm urine.
For swelling and pain in the ears with intermittent discharge of pus and blood following jaundice, first clean the pus and blood with cotton. Then mix black sugar with a little water, drip into the ear, and the pain will subside.
Grind together Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai, 黄柏) and Sophorae Flavescentis Radix (Kushen, 苦参) into powder, blend with clear oil, boil down to make an ointment, and apply externally. Alternatively, take leaves of the Tung tree (Tongziye, 桐子叶), soften them with boiling water, apply the medicine on the leaf, and stick it on for three to five times until effective. Also, take dozens of lamp wick flowers (Denghua, 灯花), stir-fry with salt, add Lead Carbonate (Qianfen, 铅粉) to form a cake, and apply to the navel.
For cases where skin peels off all over the body after smallpox with continuous discharge of pus, use tea leaves (Chaye, 茶叶) (remove stems), soak thoroughly in hot water, spread on the bed, and sleep on it overnight; the pus will dry up naturally.
For ulcerative sores caused by worms after smallpox with continuous pus discharge, take silkworm cocoons in any quantity, fill them completely with raw Alum powder (Mingfan, 明矾), burn until the juice is exhausted and turns to ash.
Grind together Lithargyrum (Huandan, 黄丹), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩), Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai, 黄柏), Rheum Palmatum (Dahuang, 大黄), and Calomelas (Qingfen, 轻粉) into powder, blend with lard, and apply externally.
For rashes that fail to erupt fully, suddenly disappear due to wind exposure, accompanied by swelling, shortness of breath, and imminent death, take raw green onion heads (Shengcong tou, 生葱头) (one or two jin), crush them with roots, place in a basin.
For measles that fail to erupt fully, with severe asthma approaching death, take Sesame Seeds (Zhimazi, 芝麻) (five he), soak in boiling water, and fumigate the head and face with the heat to induce eruption. Additionally, burn Agarwood (Chenxiang, 沉香), Costus Root (Muxiang, 木香), and Sandalwood (Tanxiang, 檀香) in large quantities in a large basin, hold the child over the smoke for fumigation, and the condition will improve.
Mix good white honey with water, dip goose feather quills frequently, and sweep/apply to the affected area.
Soak peach leaves in brine and rub the affected area.
For wool rash (Yangmaozhen, 羊毛疹) with yellow eyes and purplish nails, mix burning wine with yellow earth, and slowly rub and massage the chest.
The First Compilation of Four Volumes of "Wai Zhi Shou Shi Fang" was personally edited by my friend Mr. Zou Lisheng and entrusted to me for collation. Among external treatment methods, acupuncture and moxibustion are the most ancient. However, the zang-fu organs are delicate and cannot withstand harsh attacks; medicinal administration is even more difficult for postpartum women and tuberculosis patients. Ancient formulas employed methods such as fomentation, bathing, fumigation, and steaming to supplement the limitations of internal medicine. Scholars from the Tang and Song dynasties sought these methods everywhere, acknowledging that decoctions cannot cure all diseases. Therefore, apart from acupuncture and moxibustion, how else can efficacy be achieved without using fomentation, bathing, fumigation, and steaming? The completion of this compilation is indeed suitable for remote villages with few doctors, but is it not also an essential book for the medical profession?
