A few days before the onset of the illness, apply Yanghe Jiening Gao (Warming Meridians and Resolving Stasis Plaster) to the back. Use Changshan (Dichroa Root), Yunling (Poria), Guangui (Cinnamon Twig), Gancao (Licorice Root), and Binglang (Areca Seed), each 3 qian; and 49 Xiaoheidou (Black Soybeans). Add two bowls of wine and two bowls of water, simmer slowly until two bowls of liquid remain. Take one bowl on the evening of the first day, cover warmly with blankets and sleep. Reserve the remaining bowl; take it all at once in a hot state two hours before the next malaria attack, keep warm under blankets, lie down waiting for the malaria to strike; even if it strikes, the symptoms will be mild. Some may recover on the same day. After recovery, abstain from sexual intercourse, avoid raw and cold foods, and prevent fatigue and exposure to wind and frost. Avoid chicken, mutton, beef, eggs, and Bai Biandou (White Hyacinth Bean). Practice self-restraint for half a month to permanently prevent recurrence. For minor malaria, reduce the dosage by half.
Ma said: Although Changshan (Dichroa Root) is effective in treating malaria, its action is ultimately too harsh and drastic. I recently attached a prescription that is very miraculous and effective, which is worth emulating. Use 4 liang of Changshan (Dichroa Root), 5 jin of aged wine, and 7 chicken eggs. Boil them in a clay pot until hot. When malaria strikes, hold the eggs in both hands; replace them when they cool, continuing until fever subsides and sweating occurs. This method is miraculously effective for chronic malaria, but should not be used during the initial stage of the disease.
For patients suffering from Huangdan (Jaundice), characterized by yellowing of the whites of the eyes, dark red urine, and generalized weakness, chewing raw Huangdou (Soybeans) without inducing nausea indicates suitability for this treatment. Use Cang'erzi (Xanthium Fruit), Bohe (Mint), Mutong (Akebia Stem), and Mian Yincheng (Artemisia Capillaris), each 3 qian. Decoct these in 1 jin of aged wine until one bowl of liquid remains, then mix in 3 qian of fried Sharen (Amomum Fruit Powder) and take orally. If urine is dark red like blood, add Chuanlian (Coptis Rhizome) 1 qian and decoct together.
Ma said: This prescription is also balanced and safe, but Xiangji Gao (Fragrant Crucian Carp Plaster) is more miraculous.
The above prescriptions have cured many people repeatedly. Some critics argued that paralysis and jaundice are dampness syndromes and thus alcohol should be contraindicated. They fail to realize that although wine is a damp-producing substance, here it serves to capture dampness, identify sites of damp accumulation, and lead the medicinal herbs to battle the dampness; without wine, this cannot be achieved. Others asked: Why does it fail for those who do not consume any alcohol? The answer is: When wine is diluted by water, its efficacy is neutralized, akin to thieves being obstructed and unable to function.
For dysentery, whether red or white, Chuanlian (Coptis Rhizome) is strictly contraindicated; taking it causes adverse reactions or worsening of the condition. For dysentery accompanied by abdominal pain, do not use other formulas. Instead, use only 2 qian of fried and powdered Cheqianzi (Plantago Seed); Binglang (Areca Seed), Chunpu (Magnolia Bark), Zhatan (Charred Hawthorn Fruit), Chenpi (Tangerine Peel), Huashi (Talcum), and Gancao (Licorice Root), each 1 qian; Hongqu (Red Yeast Rice) fried, 3 qian; Zexie (Alisma Rhizome) and Zhishi (Immature Bitter Orange), each 1 qian; Dengxin (Juncus Effusus Pith), a small handful. Decoct these eleven ingredients together. Separately, grind 6 fen of Muxiang (Aucklandia Root) with wine. Mix this Muxiang wine solution into the decoction along with aged wine and take orally for immediate recovery. Any modification of the ingredients will render it ineffective.
If the onset involves no pain, only pus and blood in the stool, accompanied by flowing yellow fluid, this results from a habitual preference for cold tea, raw water/alcohol, and laxative foods, leading to accumulated dampness and forming Xiuxi Li (Resting Dysentery). Patients must avoid fruits, raw water/alcohol, cold/raw foods, sea cucumber, and jellyfish, all of which are cold-natured. Use live eels, remove intestines and viscera, cut into segments, place on tiles, roast into charcoal, and grind into powder. Take 3 qian per dose, mixed with brown sugar, and wash down with hot aged wine. Several doses will cure the condition. It is miraculously effective for long-standing loose stools and dysentery, regardless of age.
