Song says: Zixia Gao (Purple Cloud Plaster) is applied to chronic ulcers of many years. Malachite Green (Tonglü), Calomel (Qingfen), Dragon's Blood (Xuejie), Frankincense (Ruxiang), and Myrrh (Moyao) are effective. Castor seeds (Bimaren) and Pine Rosin (Songxiang) are combined together; the proportion of Beeswax (Baila) and Refined Oil (Qingyou) should be appropriate. For stubborn sores and toxins that fail to heal over a long period, one application yields extraordinary results.
(Prescription) Malachite Green (Tonglü, 铜绿) - 5 qian; Dragon's Blood (Xuejie, 血竭) - 5 qian; Frankincense (Ruxiang, 乳香) - 5 qian; Myrrh (Moyao, 没药) - 5 qian; Pine Rosin (Songxiang, 松香) - 1 liang; Castor Seeds (Bimaren, 蓖麻仁) - 100 grains; Calomel (Qingfen, 轻粉) - 2 qian.
(Method of Preparation) First, grind the first five medicinal materials into fine powder together, put them into a stone mortar, then add Castor Seeds (Bimaren) and Calomel (Qingfen), and drip in a few drops of Refined Oil (Qingyou) to pound together. After pounding about two or three thousand times, it can become a plaster. If it does not form a plaster, add dozens more Castor Seeds and continue pounding until the plaster in the mortar becomes soft like cotton and fully integrated. Then store it for future use.
(Method of Application) This plaster is good at eliminating damp-heat, extracting toxins, and promoting flesh regeneration. It is suitable for those who suffer from sores caused by damp-heat infection during summer and autumn; applying this plaster has a very rapid effect on removing necrotic tissue and generating new muscle. It also has special effects on other conditions such as syphilis and sores.
The "Zixia Gao" in Xu Zang's *Essence of Verified Prescriptions* differs slightly from this prescription, but its refining method is highly worthy of reference. Therefore, it is transcribed here for reference:
Processed Pine Rosin (Songxiang, 松香) - 6 liang; Processed Frankincense and Myrrh (Ruxiang, 乳香 & Moyao, 没药) - 6 qian each; Dragon's Blood (Xuejie, 血竭) - 4 qian; Malachite Green (Tonglü, 铜绿) - 2 qian; Borneol (Chaonao, 潮脑) - 6 qian; Cinnabar (Zhusha, 朱砂) - 3 liang; Waist Yellow (Yaohuang, 腰黄) - 8 qian; Musk (Shexiang, 麝香) - 8 fen; Castor Seeds (Bimaren, 蓖麻仁) - 3 liang.
Of the above eleven ingredients, except for Pine Rosin (Songxiang) and Castor Seeds (Bimaren), grind the remaining medicines into powder separately for later use. The dosage of each medicine is based on the net weight after grinding, so prepare extra before grinding to avoid insufficient quantity afterwards. When making the plaster, pound the Pine Rosin (Songxiang) in a stone mortar until soft. Next, add Castor Seeds (Bimaren). Third, add Malachite Green (Tonglü). Fourth, add Child's Bone (Ercha, 儿茶). Fifth, add Frankincense (Ruxiang). Sixth, add Myrrh (Moyao). Seventh, add Dragon's Blood (Xuejie). Eighth, add Borneol (Chaonao). Ninth, add Cinnabar (Zhusha). Tenth, add Waist Yellow (Yaohuang). Finally, add Musk (Shexiang). After mixing well, store in a jar, seal with paper, and keep for use. The weights listed above are calculated per batch. If making a larger batch at once, the process is simpler, but pounding becomes difficult due to the increased amount of Pine Rosin. Therefore, arrange for several people to take turns pounding continuously to ensure proficiency. If the mixture is too dry during pounding, adjust by adding some Castor Seeds. If the old plaster becomes hard, use the same method to adjust.
This plaster is specifically used for treating scrofula (Luoli, 瘰疬). For unruptured cases, it can naturally dissipate; for ruptured cases with pus discharge, Calomel (Qingfen) and Xi Huang Wan (Rhino Horn Powder) should be added appropriately to assist treatment. When spreading the plaster, melt it by heating in a water bath. Avoid direct fire roasting. Alternatively, warm it on a hot water kettle when ready to use. Do not use direct fire, because the Musk (Shexiang) in the plaster will lose its aroma and efficacy if exposed to heat.
Method of Processing Pine Rosin (Songxiang): Take 5 jin of Pine Rosin (Songxiang). Use 10 jin of fresh Hibiscus mutabilis flowers with leaves (flowers are preferred), 5 jin of Willow twigs, 5 jin of Peach leaves, 5 jin of Pomegranate leaves, and 1 jin of Licorice Root (Gancao, 甘草). Boil to make a concentrated decoction, remove dregs, and filter clearly. Reserve a small portion separately and let it cool. Put the rest in a pot and place it outdoors (do not place indoors to prevent splashing). Add Pine Rosin (Songxiang) and boil again. The ratio is approximately one bucket of Pine Rosin to three buckets of decoction. When the oil boils off, scoop out successively with a copper spoon and pour into the cold reserved decoction to solidify. Shape each piece like a sesame cake, pierce a hole in the center, thread with coarse hemp rope, pack into cloth bags, tie tightly, and soak in a manure pit for 49 days. Remove, take out of the bag, rinse with running water for three days, expose to air for seven days and nights, then bury in soil for seven days. Store for use; two to three years aged material is best. The manure pit should preferably contain feces from healthy young boys and girls; feces from older, robust women are secondary. However, feces from menstruating women are taboo. Feces from adult males are unsuitable.
