Itching in the ears, which persists even after scratching until bleeding occurs, is attributed to Kidney Wind (Shen Feng). It is appropriate to administer San Yin Si Sheng San (Three Causes Four Generations Powder); two or three doses will lead to recovery.
Si Sheng San (See section on Renal Wind Sores)
La Dan Wan (Wax Pill) treats deafness caused by Lung Qi Deficiency (Fei Qi Xu).
Shan Yao (Fried Dioscoreae Rhizoma, 3 liang) Bai Fu Ling (Poria, 2 liang) Xing Ren (Apricot Seed, peeled and de-seeded, fried, 2.5 qian)
Grind into fine powder. Melt Huang La (Beeswax, 1 liang) and form pills the size of a bullet. Chew and swallow with salt water decoction. For those with shortness of breath and dry throat, use Sheng Mai San (Generate Pulse Powder) decoction to chew and swallow.
This prescription is from Wang Tidu of Dong Yuan. It treats sudden deafness; fumigate one or two times. For cases lasting three to five years, fumigate five to seven times for complete recovery. Chronic cases of many years are difficult to cure.
Ling Ci Shi (Magnetitum, 7 qian) Zhen Zhu (Pearl, 7 grains, lightly roasted) Dang Men Zi She Xiang (Moschus, 3 grains)
Grind into extremely fine powder. Qi Ai (Artemisia argyi, 1 qian) is ground into coarse powder. Take a sheet of white soft cotton paper, place it on a warm copper vessel, and rub Huang La (Beeswax, 5 qian) evenly over the paper. Cut it into a five-cun square frame.
Spread the prepared Ai Jun (moxa wool) evenly on the paper, sprinkle the medicinal powder on top of the moxa, and roll it into a tube. Heat the waxed paper with fire to adhere it firmly for later use. Roll thick paper into a trumpet-shaped tube, place the small end against the ear, ignite the medicine tube, blow out the flame, and fumigate the ear while tilting the head. The therapeutic force can penetrate through the ear to the pharynx, with very rapid efficacy. After fumigation, plug the ear with moxa to prevent wind invasion.
Feng Zhu Dan treats deafness.
Take one chicken egg, make a small hole, insert one Ba Dou (Crotonis Fructus), remove the heart membrane. Seal with double-layered paper and let a hen incubate it until the chick hatches. Extract the egg white and drip it into the ear, twice daily.
Another method: pour Rat Gallbladder Juice (Shu Dan Zhi) into the ear. After a short while, have someone look inside the ear. When insects are seen within the auditory canal, use a twisted thread to grasp the head of the insect and slowly pull it out. The size of the insect corresponds to the duration of the disease. Once the insect is removed, the patient may feel dizzy but will recover consciousness shortly after, and hearing will be restored. This method is effective regardless of whether the condition is new or chronic, and whether it affects one or both ears. If both ears are affected, treat with two gallbladders.
