The face belongs to the Yang meridians, and is primarily governed by the Stomach Meridian of Foot-Yangming. If there is heat in the Stomach, the face feels hot; if there is cold in the Stomach, the face feels cold. Shengma Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Cimicifuga Decoction) is indicated. For heat patterns, add Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma); for cold patterns, add Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata). If there is wind-heat in the Stomach, facial edema occurs; if there is damp-heat in the Stomach, sores appear on the face. Alternatively, the nose and cheeks may turn purple, or wind-thorns and urticaria-like rashes may develop. Shengma Xiaodu San (Cimicifuga Detoxification Powder), Qinjiao Tang (Magnolia Vine Decoction), Heilong Wan (Black Dragon Pill), and Ershen Tang (Two Ginsengs Decoction) are indicated.
Yellow Water Sore: Occurring on the head, face, ears, and neck, yellow millet-like pustules suddenly appear. Upon rupture, they exude serous fluid and spread rapidly within moments, often accompanied by pain and itching. This is caused by external invasion of wind-heat and internal injury from damp-heat. Shengma Qingdu San (Cimicifuga Clearing Toxin Powder) is indicated to clear the condition. Wash with salt water and apply Qingge San (Blue Shell Powder).
Shengma Xiaodu San: Treats facial swelling and sores.
Ingredients: Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix), Jinyinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Niubangzi (Arctii Fructus). (If sores exist on the body, add Dangguiwei (Angelicae Sinensis Radix caudex) and Honghua (Carthami Flos).)
Usage: Use two zhong (ancient unit of volume) of water, decoct until reduced to eight-tenths. Take warm long after meals. Externally, use Xingren (Prunus Armeniacae Semen Amarum), peeled and de-husked, pounded into a paste, and applied to the affected area.
Qingge San: Treats yellow water sores and other damp-heat sores.
Ingredients: Gefen (Concha Meretrix), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Qingfen (Calomelas), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, raw), Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis).
Usage: Grind all ingredients into fine powder. First mix with sesame oil to form a lump, then dilute with cool water. Clean the sore thoroughly and apply a thin layer to the affected area.
Er Bai San: Treats yellow water sores, as well as sores eroding the eyebrows, beard area like "sheep's beard," and nest-like suppurative sores.
Ingredients: Qianfen (Cerussa, 1 liang, mixed with water, spread in a bowl, smoked with mugwort for five to seven times until it turns yellow), plus Qingfen (Calomelas, 1 liang).
Usage: Grind into powder. Mix with sesame oil (extracted by frying sophora branches until withered and straining) and apply to the affected area.
Yi Huang San: Treats conditions identical to the above.
Ingredients: Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 1 liang, ground into powder, mixed with water, spread in a bowl, smoked with mugwort and one fen of Chanshanjia (Manis Squama) until it turns pure black), plus Qingfen (Calomelas, 5 qian), Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum, 2 fen).
