Jia Yang (abscess of the cheek) arises from accumulated heat in the Stomach Meridian. Initially, it resembles a red millet grain, gradually enlarging to resemble a pomegranate. If pus is discharged and swelling subsides, healing occurs easily; if the pus is thin and difficult to consolidate, a fistula may form.
[Note] This condition occurs between the bone below the ear at the Jiache point, caused by accumulated heat in the Yangming Stomach Meridian. It begins like a millet grain, red in color, gradually enlarging to the size of a pomegranate. At the initial stage, Xijiao Shengma Tang (Rhino Horn and Cimicifuga Decoction) should be used to clear heat and resolve the exterior. If treatment is delayed, or if cold medicines are over-applied, causing muscle coldness and coagulation, resulting in hardness that is difficult to dissipate or suppurate, Shengyang Sanhuo Tang (Raising Yang and Dispersing Fire Decoction) should be used to vent the stagnant fire. When about to suppurate, Tuoli Xiaodu San (Supporting the Interior and Detoxifying Powder) is appropriate. Once the pus is ripe, it should be punctured with a needle. If the swelling recedes after pus discharge and the wound closes easily, the patient will recover. If there is trismus (lockjaw) preventing mouth opening, or persistent swelling on the side, with thin purulent discharge leading to fistula formation, compounded by cold pathogen invading the wound hole causing exostosis (multiple dead bones), resulting in a chronic, lingering condition difficult to heal for years, Guifu Dihuang Wan (Cinnamon Twig and Aconite Rehmannia Pill) should be taken. Externally, apply moxibustion using a Fermented Soybean Cake (Douchi Bing) as a cushion. Start with nine moxa cones, stopping when warmth and itching are felt. Perform moxibustion daily until the necrotic bone falls out, pus decreases gradually, and tissue levels out. Concurrently, use Hongsheng Dan (Red Ascending Cinnabar) rolled into strips and inserted into the wound, covered with Wanying Gao (All-Effect Ointment), changing once daily. The patient should maintain careful daily routines and avoid pungent, fishy, and "fa" (stimulating/allergic-triggering) foods to gradually achieve recovery.
