These two types of toxic swellings arise from the sudden invasion and binding of external pathogenic factors to the Qi and blood distribution of the Kidney Meridian (Shen Mai) and the Du Meridian (Governing Vessel). Longquan Abscess (Longquan Ju) manifests in the philtrum area, while Huxu Toxic Swelling (Huxu Du) occurs above the chin. Initially, nodules appear, followed by swelling and pain, gradually accompanied by chills and fever. In severe cases, nausea and dry retching occur, with both cheeks and neck becoming swollen. Moxibustion is contraindicated at this acupoint. At the onset, it is advisable to puncture the apex of the lesion with a thread needle, apply a Chan Su Cake (Toad Venom Cake), and cover it with a plaster to provide an outlet for the toxin to drain; apply Ruyi Jinhuang San (Ruyi Golden Yellow Powder) to the surrounding swollen areas. For patients with exterior syndrome symptoms, Jingfang Baidu San (Schizonepeta and Saposhnikovia Decoction to Relieve Toxins) added with Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root), Lian Zi (Coptis Rhizome - *Note: Text says 'Lian', usually Coptis or Lotus seed, context implies Coptis/Huanglian for heat*), and Niu Bang Zi (Arctium Fruit) should be used; for interior syndrome symptoms, Neishu Huanglian Tang (Internal Draining Coptis Decoction) is indicated. When the abscess has formed but not yet ruptured, aiming to promote suppuration, Xionggui Nituo San (Ligusticum and Angelica Decoction to Support the Interior) is prescribed; if there is distending pain after pus formation, needle drainage will lead to recovery. After rupture and pus discharge, only plaster changes are needed, allowing the wound to heal easily. This condition often occurs in individuals with robust Yuan Qi (Original Qi), so medication is often unnecessary as it tends to resolve spontaneously.
Xionggui Nituo San (Ligusticum and Angelica Decoction to Support the Interior)
Xionggui Nituo San consists of Chenpi (Tangerine Peel), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), Tianhuafen (Trichosanthes Root), Fuling (Poria), Huangqi (Astragalus Root), Gancao (Licorice Root), and Yinhua (Honeysuckle Flower). It is most suitable for treating Huxu Toxic Swelling and Longquan Abscess.
Ingredients: Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Chenpi (Tangerine Peel), Fuling (Poria), Tianhuafen (Trichosanthes Root), Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), Yinhua (Honeysuckle Flower), Huangqi (Astragalus Root) (each 1 qian), Gancao (Licorice Root) (0.5 qian).
Administration: Decoct in two zhong of water until reduced to eight fen, take after meals.

Neishu Huanglian Tang (Internal Draining Coptis Decoction)
Jingfang Baidu San (Schizonepeta and Saposhnikovia Decoction to Relieve Toxins) (See Chapter on Time-Specific Toxins)
Shiliu Ju (Pomegranate Abscess) arises from the boiling and binding of Shaoyang Ministerial Fire (Shaoyang Xiang Huo) with external dampness. The lesion appears one cun above the tip of the elbow. Initially, a single yellow millet-sized blister appears, which rapidly expands at the base, becoming red, hard, and swollen like an inverted bowl. Upon skin rupture, exudate emerges in layers resembling pomegranate seeds, causing chills similar to severe malaria. At the onset, nine moxa cones should be applied. Internally, Chan Su Wan (Toad Venom Pill) should be taken to induce sweating and resolve accumulated toxins. Apply Chan Su Paste to the top of the lesion covered by a plaster; apply Jinhuang San (Golden Yellow Powder) to painful areas. Internally administer Juhua Qingzao Tang (Chrysanthemum Dryness-Clearing Decoction) and Hupo Lafan Wan (Amber and Alum Pill); for severe restlessness and heat, use Huxin San (Heart-Protecting Powder) and Jin Ye Wutu Dan (Golden Liquid Earth Earth Pill). After nine days, if the lesion suppurates with thick yellow pus, pain slightly decreases, exterior and interior symptoms recede, and appetite slightly returns, recovery can be assured; otherwise, it indicates a adverse prognosis. If post-rupture weakness of Yuan Qi (Original Qi) exists with complicated symptoms, manage according to the treatment principles for carbuncles and ulcers.
Juhua Qingzao Tang (Chrysanthemum Dryness-Clearing Decoction)
Juhua Qingzao Tang consists of Shengdi (Rehmannia Root), Zhimu (Anemarrhena Rhizome), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Shudi (Prepared Rehmannia Root), Digupi (Phellodendron Bark), Chaihu (Bupleurum Root), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), Gancao (Licorice Root), Shengma (Cimicifuga Rhizome), Xijiao (Rhinoceros Horn - *Note: Modern substitute typically Buffalo Horn/Niujiaohuang*), Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber), and Baishao (White Peony Root).
Ingredients: Ganju (Chrysanthemum Flower) (2 qian), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum Rhizome), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Zhimu (Anemarrhena Rhizome), Beimu (Fritillaria Bulb), Baishao (White Peony Root), Shengdi (Rehmannia Root), Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber), Digupi (Phellodendron Bark) (each 1 qian), Shengma (Cimicifuga Rhizome), Xijiao (Rhinoceros Horn), Gancao (Licorice Root), Chaihu (Bupleurum Root), Huangqin (Scutellaria Root) (each 0.5 qian).
Administration: Decoct in two zhong of water with twenty pieces each of Danzhuye (Bamboo Leaf) and Dengxincao (Juncus Effusus Pith) until reduced to eight fen, take after meals.
