For treating liuzhu (multiple abscesses deep in the muscles) and all swellings and pains caused by anger and qi stagnation. Or for oppression and fullness in the chest and diaphragm. Or when wind, cold, and dampness toxins contend within the channels and collaterals, leading to disharmony of qi and blood, which congeal to form masses. The skin and flesh color over the mass remains unchanged. Or there is diffuse swelling with wooden hardness and dull pain, without a distinct pus head. (This is the Liuqi Yin formula used in sore/ulcer medicine.)
Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix, stir-fried) Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, mixed with wine) Guangui (Cinnamomi Cortex) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried) Huangqi (Astragali Radix, soaked in salt water and then stir-fried) Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, processed with ginger) Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) Zisu (Perillae Folium) Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) Wuyao (Linderae Radix) Zhiqiao (Aurantii Fructus) (each 0.7 qian) Binglang (Arecae Semen) Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma) Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) (each 0.5 qian)
Decoct with two zhong of water until eight fen remain. Take on an empty stomach, far from meals.
For treating ulcers. When qi and blood are extremely deficient. With aversion to cold or fever. Or signs of blood loss. Ge Kejiu (Ge Gansun) treated blood collapse by supplementing qi, using precisely this formula.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang) Decoct with two zhong of water and ten pieces of Da Zao (Jujubae Fructus) until one zhong remains. Take slowly. If decocted until thick and concentrated, it becomes a paste/electuary.
Bajitian (Morindae Officinalis Radix, core removed) Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma) Buguzhi (Psoraleae Fructus, stir-fried) Xiaohuixiang (Foeniculi Fructus, stir-fried) Mudanpi (Moutan Cortex) (each 5 qian) Qingyan (refined salt, 2.5 qian, added last) Roucongrong (Cistanches Herba, washed with wine, 1 liang) Gouqizi (Lycii Fructus, 1 liang)
Grind the above ingredients into fine powder. Make into honey pills the size of wutongzi (Firmianae Semen). Take 50 pills each time, swallowed with salt water on an empty stomach.
For treating bone-steaming (a manifestation of yin deficiency with internal heat). Tidal fever. Spontaneous sweating. Coughing up foul-smelling, thick, and sticky phlegm.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) Digupi (Lycii Cortex) Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix) (each 1.5 qian) Baifuling (Poria) Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) Huangqi (Astragali Radix, honey-fried) Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, stir-fried) Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, calcined) (each 1 qian)
Decoct with two zhong of water until eight fen remain. Take on an empty stomach, far from meals.
For treating throat obstruction (sore throat with obstruction), chanhoufeng (acute throat inflammation with swelling and pain extending to the neck). Phlegm and saliva congesting the throat. In severe cases, even water and gruel are difficult to swallow.
Yanxiao (Potassium Nitrate, 1.5 liang) Pengsha (Borax, 5 qian) Naozi (Borneolum Syntheticum, 1 zi) Xionghuang (Realgar, 2 qian) Baijiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus, 1 qian)
Grind each ingredient separately into fine powder and mix well. Blow the powder onto the affected area using a bamboo tube. Phlegm and saliva will then be expelled. If the throat swelling does not subside after phlegm is expelled, promptly needle the affected area to release foul blood.
For treating scrofula (cervical lymph node tuberculosis). It causes self-resolution if not yet suppurated, and self-contraction if already ulcerated. If the tubercle/nodule has not been removed, further apply Zhentou San (Needle-tip Powder) to erode it. If the patient's qi and blood are deficient, first take several doses of Yiqi Yangrong Tang (Qi-Benefiting and Nourishing Decoction). Then take this powder. After taking it, the scrofula toxin will be expelled downward (via stool). Then take several more doses of the aforementioned decoction.
Nan Pengsha (Borax, 2.5 qian) Qingfen (Calomelas, 1 qian) Banmao (Mylabris, 40 pieces, stir-fried with glutinous rice until cooked, wings and heads removed) Shexiang (Moschus, 5 fen) Badou (Crotonis Fructus, 5 grains, shell, heart, and membrane removed) Bai Binglang (Arecae Semen, 1 piece)
Grind the above ingredients into fine powder. Take 1 qian each time; for robust individuals, take 1.5 qian. Take at the fifth watch (around 3-5 am) mixed with boiling water. If difficult urination or slight pain occurs afterward, this indicates the scrofula toxin is about to be expelled. Administer another dose of the powder, and the toxin will be expelled. Banmao and Badou seem potent and drastic, but Badou can counteract the toxicity of Banmao. Users should not fear. I once encountered a wealthy merchant with a very large scrofula scar on his neck. Upon inquiry, he said it was caused by anger. He suffered for two years, and no method was effective. Only then was he given this medicine. After one dose, it receded by twenty to thirty percent. After a second dose, it receded markedly. After four doses, it flattened. Within ten days, he recovered. He sought the formula with generous gifts, and it turned out to be Bixiao San. An old woman also treated this condition, demanding a high price before agreeing to treat. Her formula involved inserting a medium-grade Dingzi (medicated cone/nail) into the sore, covering it with a plaster. The root would then rot away by itself. If not completely rotted, use it again. After complete removal, apply shengji (flesh-generating) medicine. Recovery occurred within days. I have observed that it is indeed effective for those whose qi and blood are not deficient. For those with deficient qi and blood, even if ulceration is induced, it may not heal. Zhu Danxi also said that taking Bixiao San together with Shenxiao Gualou San (Miraculous Trichosanthes Powder) has miraculous effects. Often, using these two medicines combined with supplementing formulas is effective. Note: Although Dingzi is potent and drastic, it is likely because the tubercles are hard; without this, they are not easily eroded. Although Bixiao San contains the potent Banmao, for deep-seated scrofula toxin, nothing else may easily resolve it. Moreover, Badou counteracts the toxicity. However, for those with deficient qi and blood, using it might be mistaken. A Daoist priest treated this condition using seven chicken eggs, placing one Banmao into each egg, steaming them cooked over rice. Take one egg on an empty stomach daily. Many sought his treatment. However, for those with deficient qi and blood, this method probably cannot cure it either.
