(Also known as Feng Du [Madness Toxin] or Yangmei Yong Lou [Mulberry-Shape Carbuncle and Fistula].)
Jie Du [Knot Toxin], arises when, during the onset of a sore, the pathogenic toxin is at its peak. Mistaken use of fumigation with medicinal herbs, internal retention of Calomel (Qingfen), or application of astringent medicines causes the toxin to sink deep into the bone marrow and joint cavities. This manifests as symptoms such as loss of lips, erosion of eyes, perforation of the throat, and contracture and spasms of the hands and feet. Treatment method: In the initial stage, take San Huang Wan (Three-Yellow Pill) daily, followed by decoctions containing Hengdong Teng (Lonicerae Japonicae Caulis) and Niubang Cao (Arctii Herba) to exhaust the residual toxin. Once the lesion color turns red and vibrant, apply Dongtian Gao (Cave Heaven Ointment) to achieve healing. Shengling Dan (Holy Spirit Pill) treats Jie Du with comprehensive efficacy, unsurpassed by any other formula. However, this formula contains Xi Huang (Calculus Bovis) and Zhenzhu (Margarita), which are expensive, and their dosages cannot be reduced even slightly. It costs dozens of taels of silver to prepare, posing a dilemma for the poor. Alternatively, Jiedu Zijin Dan (Purple Gold Pill for Knot Toxin) and Yangmei Yonglou Tang (Mulberry-Shape Carbuncle and Fistula Decoction) are highly effective, even for chronic cases, with low cost. For patients who have been ill for a long time and are weak, it is advisable to combine them with tonifying therapies. Dietary restrictions include fire wine, pig's head meat, fermented foods, seafood, tea, vinegar, Sichuan pepper, ginger, garlic, beef, mutton, chicken, goose, tofu, gluten, and fresh fish. Pork is not restricted.
1. For Jie Du located in the throat, Qishen San (Seven-God Powder) can be insufflated into the affected area. Oral medication follows the aforementioned method.
Shengling Dan (Holy Spirit Pill)
Ingredients: Zhenzhu (Margarita), Xi Huang (Calculus Bovis), Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum) (each 1 qian); Hupo (Succinum) (4 qian, red variety preferred); Pisha (Realgar), Dilushi (Stalactitum) (each 3 qian, transparent variety preferred).
Preparation: Process each ingredient separately, grind into powder, mix with 4 liang of refined flour, grind thoroughly, and store in a sealed container. Take 5 fen per dose, mixed with decoction of Tufuling (Smilacis Glabrae Rhizoma), and wash down with the same decoction.
Modifications: Add one Soap Nut (Feizaozi) to boil with Tufuling. If the toxin affects the nose or forehead, add Xinyi (Magnoliae Flos) 3 qian to boil with Tufuling.
Jiedu Zijin Dan (Purple Gold Pill for Knot Toxin)
Ingredients: Guiban (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum) (roasted over charcoal until dry, coated repeatedly with new wine slurry using a brush, roasted three times until scorched yellow, ground to fine powder, 2 liang); Shijueming (Haliotidis Concha) (select nine-holed red shells, soaked overnight in children's urine, ground to powder); Zhusha (Cinnabaris) (6 qian, bright luster, levigated powder).
Preparation: Grind all ingredients to an extremely fine powder. Form pills the size of hemp seeds using soft rice or rice water. Take 1 qian per dose, administered before or after meals depending on the location of the disease. For bone and joint pain, administer with wine. This formula is also miraculous for severe destruction of the throat, lips, and nose where other medicines fail, serving as an alternative to Shengling Dan.
Yangmei Yonglou Fang (Mulberry-Shape Carbuncle and Fistula Formula)
Ingredients: Heiqian (Plumbum) (3 liang, melted and amalgamated with 5 qian of Hydrargyrum while hot, ground into powder, divided into five portions for later use in decoction); Tufuling (Smilacis Glabrae Rhizoma) (5 liang); Rendong (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos/Caulis) (1 liang); Zaoci (Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina) (1 qian); Yujin (Curcumae Longae Radix) (5 fen).
Preparation: Cut the herbs, add one stalk of Congbai (Allii fistulosi Bulbus), decoct, remove dregs, then add 1 fen of the prepared lead powder and decoct again. Take well after meals. (The lead powder can be retrieved after decoction. Since Yangmei Yonglou requires inducing mild sweating, the first dose of each batch should aim for slight perspiration. Method for inducing sweat: Decoct 1 liang of Lonicerae Japonicae Caulis leaves and stems, along with Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica), and Huajiao (Zanthoxyli Pericarpium) each 5 qian, in two dou of water. Fumigate and then wash in a draft-free environment. Natural sweating leads to cure. For cases lasting 20-30 years, four batches administered over four sessions will ensure complete recovery. Avoid beef, distilled spirits, and "fa-wu" [hair-raising/triggering foods]. Xu Chunfu used this formula exclusively with success, hence recorded in detail.)
Qishen San (Seven-God Powder)
Ingredients: Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) (coated with honey, roasted nine times, ground to powder, 1 qian); Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus) (roasted on a new tile until dry, ground to powder, 1 qian); Ercha (Catechu) (5 fen, ground to powder); Zhi Ruxiang (Frankincense) (5 fen); Zhi Moyao (Myrrha) (5 fen); Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum) (5 fen); Renzhongbai (Urinae Siccata) (ground to powder, 1 qian).
Preparation: Grind all ingredients to an extremely fine powder and insufflate into the affected area.
