The symptoms include excessive tearing, a dull pain and dryness making it difficult to open the eyes, and pain when moving the eyeballs. At the onset, the eyelids should be turned inside out, and a hairpin wrapped in cotton used to extract the foreign body. If left untreated for a long time, nebula (corneal opacity) may develop; this must not be neglected or mishandled.
1. When "Tian Si Feng Yang" (foreign filaments or threads entering the eye) occurs, immediate treatment is required. Grind Beijing ink into a thick paste, apply it with a new brush into the eye, keep the eyes closed for a moment, then gently open them with your hand. The filaments will naturally clump together; wipe them away gently with cotton to cure. If not fully removed, reapply.
Another prescription: Crush Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii (Shichangpu), insert it into the left nostril for the right eye, or into the right nostril for the left eye. The foreign body will be expelled. This method has proven effective repeatedly.
1. If soot enters the eye, do not wash it with hot water under any circumstances, as this will increase pain and may even cause blindness. Instead, use loose hair or textile tassels to gently rub the eye until cured.
1. If dust particles enter the eye, spit saliva onto a stone bottle, grind human fingernails into the saliva to create a thick liquid, dip a bone hairpin into it, and apply it to the eye. After a short while, wipe the eye to remove the foreign body.
1. If wheat awns enter the eye, crush Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii (Shichangpu) and insert it into the nostril. This method is highly effective.
1. For sand in the eye, apply chicken bile drops.
Appendix: Prescription of the Immortal Who Dispels Blindness
Renlong (Saliva insects spat out by boys; split a silver hairpin, clean thoroughly with river water, air-dry, and powder) Cuttlebone (Hai Piaoxiao, Sepiae Endoconcha) (boiled in water seven times, then powdered).
Mix these two ingredients in equal parts, grind into an extremely fine powder, and apply to the eye. It restores sight to the blind and is considered the number one prescription in history.
