This is a variation of the Shanghan (Cold Damage) disease. When the pathogenic fire of Shanghan is at its peak, one must not hastily provide food and drink; if this condition arises due to improper diet, it is urgent to administer one Gualou Fruit (Trichosanthis Fructus) for the patient to take. Would one not fear that this might weaken the patient? One fails to realize that in the syndrome of Jie Xiong (Chest Binding), where food is stuck in the chest, herbs such as Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus), Binglang (Arecae Semen), and Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) cannot expel it. It is necessary...
The Heart is the sovereign ruler of the Spirit (Shen). Not even a trace of pathogenic factor should invade it; if invaded, death occurs immediately. Pain persisting for years indicates that the pathogen has invaded the Pericardium (Xin Bao Luo). However, pathogens can be either cold or hot.
Cangzhu (2 qian) Baizhu (5 qian) Danggui (1 liang) Rougui (1 qian) Liangjiang (1 qian) [Decoct in water and take orally]
This formula treats Cold Pathogen invading the Pericardium.
If Heat Pathogen invades the Pericardium, symptoms include joy upon seeing water and increased pain upon palpation. The formula used is:
Baishao (1 liang) Hei Zhizi (3 qian) Danggui (3 qian) Shengdi (5 qian) Chenpi (8 fen) Gancao (1 qian) [Decoct in water and take orally]
Both the cold and heat syndromes are attributed to the Liver. Since the Liver belongs to Wood and the Heart to Fire, when Wood Qi is deficient and fails to generate Fire, the Pericardium becomes cold. Therefore, one should tonify the Liver to dispel the pathogen.
When a patient suffers from inability to eat, or indigestion after eating, leading to pain and fullness, or accompanied by vomiting and diarrhea, this is Liver Wood overacting on Spleen Earth. The formula used is:
Baishao (2 qian) Danggui (2 qian) Fuling (2 qian) Chaihu (2 qian) Baijiezi (1 qian) Gancao (1 qian)
Add Zhizi (2 qian) if there is internal heat; add Rougui (2 qian) if there is no heat. Decoct in water and take orally. Add Baizhu (3 qian) to this formula (omitted in *Fu Qingzhu's Andrology*); add Shanzha (3 qian) for food stagnation; add Zhike (1 qian) for rice food injury; add Banxia (1 qian) for phlegm. This formula can disperse heat and drive out cold. This is a method of "treating the right pathology by addressing the left."
If abdominal pain is unbearable, worsens with pressure, and thirst is relieved by drinking cold water which stops the pain, but severe pain returns shortly after, this is Fire Pathogen binding in the Large Intestine and Small Intestine. If not treated urgently...
Zhizi (3 qian) Fuling (1 liang) Baishao (5 qian) Cangzhu (3 qian) Dahuang (1 qian) Houpo (1 qian) Gancao (1 qian)
This formula soothes the Qi of the Liver Meridian, clears heat, and expels stasis.
