Any chronic abscess that fails to heal for a long time is caused by cold pathogenic factors invading the meridians, leading to blood coagulation and stasis with obstructed circulation. The accumulation and knotting of these pathological products form an abscess. After the onset of the abscess, if the heat-toxin is not fully cleared and is subsequently attacked by wind-cold, the cold combats with the swelling, causing stagnation and knotting that cannot dissipate. Consequently, it persists without healing. If it remains unhealed for a long time, it may transform into a fistula (lou).
For treating chronic abscesses that fail to heal, characterized by the retention and accumulation of wind-toxic qi, pain in the sinews and bones, prolonged discharge of pus, and failure of the wound to generate flesh, the Wuxiang Liaoqiao San (Five-Aromatic Schisandra and Forsythia Powder) formula is suitable.
Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix, 3 fen), Jiti Xiang (Caryophylli Flos, 0.5 liang), Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum, 3 fen), Xunlu Xiang (Olibanum, 0.5 liang), Shexiang (Moschus, 0.5 fen, finely ground), Liaoqiao (Forsythiae Fructus, 3 fen), Shegan (Belamcandae Rhizoma, 2 or 3 fen), Chuan Shengma (Bupleuri Radix, 3 fen), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, 3 fen, sliced), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis, 3 fen, sliced), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix, 3 fen), Sangjisheng (Taxilli Caulis et Folium, 3 fen).

For treating chronic abscesses where excessive pus discharge leads to emaciation and weakness of the four limbs, the Huangqi San (Astragalus Powder) formula is used.

For treating chronic abscesses and the retention of wind-toxic qi, forming sinus tracts with prolonged pus discharge and unceasing pain, requiring the promotion of flesh generation and internal tonification, the Zhansi San formula is used.
Zhansi (likely referring to a specific aromatic resin or herb, contextually grouped with aromatics, 0.5 liang), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix, 0.5 liang, sliced), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, 1 fen), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix, 1 fen), Liaoqiao (Forsythiae Fructus, 2 or 1 fen), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix, 1 fen), Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 2 or 1 fen, removed rhizome).
