Haibei (Back Carbuncle) with alternating chills and fever is caused by cold pathogen invading the meridians, obstructing the flow of Qi and Blood. The blood becomes stagnant and fails to circulate smoothly, resulting in the formation of sores and swellings. Furthermore, Yang Qi gathers at this site, transforming the cold pathogen into heat. When heat becomes excessive, flesh rots and turns into pus. These conditions are all due to stagnation and obstruction within the Zang-Fu organs, preventing the dispersion and unblocking of toxic factors, thus causing alternating chills and fever.
For treating Haibei and all types of carbuncle toxins that cause attacking alternating chills and fever, along with constipation and dryness of the large intestine, it is appropriate to take Loulu San (Blue Vetch Powder) for removing irritability and heat, detoxifying, and resolving toxicity.
Loulu (Radix Isatidis, 1 liang), Bailian (Rhizoma Belamcandae, 1 liang), Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae, 1 liang), Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae, 1 liang, roots and joints removed), Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae, 1 liang), Zhishi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus, 2 liang, sliced and lightly stir-fried), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 1 liang).
The above herbs are crushed, sifted, and made into a powder. Take 4 qian per dose. Add 1 zhong zhan (approx. 300-400ml) of water, decoct until reduced to 6 fen (approx. 2/3 of original volume), strain, and take warm without restriction on timing.
For treating Haibei swelling and toxin accompanied by alternating chills and fever, pain, dry mouth, and mental restlessness, use Renshen San (Ginseng Powder).
Renshen (Radix Ginseng, 1 liang, rhizome removed), Xiongqiong (Radix Chuanxiong, 1 liang), Shenggan Dihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, 2 liang), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 2 liang), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 1 liang, raw and sliced), Zhimu (Rhizoma Anemarrhenae, 1 liang), Chishao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra, 1 liang).
The above herbs are crushed, sifted, and made into a powder. Take 4 qian per dose. Add 1 zhong zhan of water, 14 slices of Zhuye (Leaf of Bambusa), and 100 grains of Xiaomai (Frumentum Tritici), decoct until reduced to 6 fen, strain, and take warm without restriction on timing.
