Women suffering from wind-stroke with trismus (lockjaw) and inability to open the mouth are caused by constitutional deficiency allowing wind pathogen to invade. The wind pathogen enters the sinews clamping the mandible, cheeks, and mouth. The sinews of the three Yang meridians of the hand converge in the mandible and cheeks; the sinews of the Foot-Yangming Meridian ascend and clamp the mouth. If wind pathogen carries cold qi and invades these sinews due to deficiency, it causes sinew spasms, thereby pulling the jaw tight and resulting in trismus.
