Mountain miasma malaria (Shanzhang Nue) arises in the Lingnan region near mountains and rivers. Its manifestations include alternating chills and fever during attacks, with regular intervals of remission and exacerbation. This condition is caused by inhaling damp-toxic vapors while touring stream sources. It is more severe than malaria caused by summerheat injury (Shangshu Zhi Nue).
Formula for treating mountain miasma malaria:
Podophyllum Rhizoma et Radix (Guijiu, 鬼臼) (half liang), Adzuki Bean (Chixiaodou, 赤小豆) (3 fen), Arisaema Cum Bile (Guijianyu, 鬼箭羽) (half liang), Cinnabar (Zhusha, 朱砂) (half liang, finely ground), Realgar (Xionghuang, 雄黄) (half liang, finely ground), Ferula Resin (Awei, 阿魏) (half liang, separately ground).
Crush and sieve the above ingredients into powder, mix thoroughly. Decoct the Ferula Resin in wine to form a paste, then combine with the powder to make pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds. Use one pill at a time, tie it with red silk on the middle finger (left hand for males, right hand for females), and inhale its aroma. If not cured, administer one pill with well water drawn at dawn (Jinghua Shui, 井华水). It will be cured.
Another formula:
Radix Dichroae (Hengshan, 恒山) (1 liang, chopped), Peach Kernel (Taoren, 桃仁) (60 pieces, soaked in hot water, skin and pointed ends removed, double-kernels separated, pounded into paste), Prepared Soybean Seed (Chi, 豉) (1 he, stir-fried dry).
Crush and sieve the above ingredients into powder. Mix with raw egg white to form pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds. Take on an empty stomach, administered with Tao Fu Tang (Peach Charm Decoction), 20 pills. When the attack is imminent, take another 30 pills. It will be cured.
Formula for treating mountain miasma malaria with chills, fever, and headache:
Radix Dichroae (Hengshan, 恒山) (half liang), Dried Plum Flesh (Wumei Rou, 乌梅肉) (7 pieces, lightly stir-fried), Core of Prepared Soybean Seed (Chi Xin, 豉心) (half liang), Peach Twig (Tao Zhi, 桃枝) (one handful), Testudo Carapax et Plastrum (Biejia, 鳖甲) (half liang, coated with vinegar and roasted until yellow, remove skirt edges), Excretio Mustelae (Xiong Shu Fen, 雄鼠粪) (male rat excrement, quantity omitted in text).
Finely chop the above ingredients. Soak in 1.5 large cups of wine overnight. The next morning, boil over a double boiler for about ten boils. Strain the dregs. Divide into three doses. Take one dose on an empty stomach, the second dose after some time, and the third dose when the attack is imminent.
Yinchen Wan Formula for treating mountain miasma malaria and seasonal qi disorders:
Herba Artemisiae Scopariae (Yinchen, 茵陈) (2 liang), Cannabis Fructus (Dama Ren, 大麻仁) (5 liang, pounded into paste), Prepared Soybean Seed (Chi, 豉) (5 he, stir-fried dry), Radix Dichroae (Hengshan, 恒山) (3 liang, chopped), Gardenia Seed (Zhizi Ren, 栀子仁) (2 liang), Testudo Carapax et Plastrum (Biejia, 鳖甲) (1 or 2 liang, coated with vinegar and roasted until yellow, remove skirt edges), Natrii Sulfas Chuanxiangensis (Chuan Mangxiao, 川芒硝) (2 or 3 liang, finely ground), Apricot Seed (Xingren, 杏仁) (3 liang, soaked in hot water, skin and pointed ends removed, double-kernels separated, stir-fried with bran).
Crush and sieve the above ingredients into powder. Mix with the previously pounded ingredients evenly. Combine with refined honey, pound 500-700 times, and form pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds. Each dose: administer 3 pills with rice gruel drink (Zhou Yin, 粥饮).
Formula for treating mountain miasma malaria with alternating chills and fever:
Radix Dichroae (Hengshan, 恒山) (3 liang), Dried Plum Flesh (Wumei Rou, 乌梅肉) (14 pieces), Steamer Belt (Zeng Dai, 甑带) (3 cun), True Crimson Silk (Zhen Fei Juan, 真绯绢) (3 cun), Single-clove Garlic (Du Ke Suan, 独颗蒜) (1 piece).
Decoct the above ingredients in 2 large cups of wine until reduced to 1 cup. Divide into two doses. Take the first dose before the onset of symptoms, and the second dose just as the attack is about to begin. If the symptoms suggest the attack might stop, discontinue administration. Rest comfortably; placing the head on the left side is preferable.
Gaojiao Yinzi Formula for treating mountain miasma malaria:
Rice Cake Corner (Mi Gao Jiao, 米糕角) (half liang, from the 9th day of the 9th lunar month), Cold Food Rice (Hanshi Fan, 寒食饭) (200 grains), Radix Dichroae (Hengshan, 恒山) (1 liang, chopped), Prepared Soybean Seed (Chi, 豉) (100 grains), Single-clove Garlic (Du Ke Suan, 独颗蒜) (1 piece).
Soak the above ingredients in 2 large cups of clear water overnight. At the beginning of the fifth watch (around 3-5 AM), decoct until reduced to 1 cup. Strain the dregs. Take all at once on an empty stomach. Continue until diarrhea occurs.
For treating mountain miasma malaria characterized by intermittent chills and fever, appearing and disappearing irregularly, this formula is suitable:

Finely chop all ingredients. Soak in 3 cups of wine overnight. Warm slightly and drink before the onset of the attack. Do not interrupt the treatment.
Formula for preventing contagion of mountain miasma malaria and eliminating toxic vapors:
Prepared Soybean Seed (Xiang Chi, 香豉) (1 he).
Decoct in 1 large cup of water until reduced to half a cup. Strain the dregs and take warm.
Another formula:
Raw Radix Puerariae Lobatae (Sheng Gegen, 生葛根) as needed.
Crush and press to extract juice. Drink as much as possible to eliminate heat-toxic vapors. Recovery will occur naturally.
