The xuan yong (uvula) is the gateway for voice production. The throat is the passage through which qi ascends and descends. If latent heat exists within the five zang and six fu organs and rushes upward to the throat, it results in swelling and pain of the xuan yong (uvula), making swallowing difficult. It is appropriate to take Xuan Shen San (Scrophulariae Radix Powder).
Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix, 1 liang), Chuan Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, 0.5 liang), She Gan (Belamcandae Rhizoma, 0.5 liang), Chuan Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 0.5 liang, cut into pieces and lightly stir-fried), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 fen, honey-fried until slightly reddish and cut).
Crush the above ingredients into a coarse powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Add 1 zhong zhan (approx. 200ml) of water, decoct until reduced to 6 fen (approx. 120ml), strain, and let cool to a warm temperature. Hold in the mouth and swallow frequently.
