A "nameless sore" is neither a carbuncle (Yong), nor a deep abscess (Ju), nor scabies (Jie). Its appearance resembles a malignant sore; it may heal or worsen, and people cannot name it, hence the term "nameless sore." This condition also arises from the clashing of wind-heat pathogens with blood and qi.
For treating nameless sores with immediate effect, use the Polygonum Leaf Powder Formula (Liaoye San):
Polygoni Folium (Liaoye), Platycladi Cacumen (Baiye), Minii Sublimatum (Huandan), Cerussa (Hufen), Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata (Fuzi), Setaria Italica Semen (Sumi), Vitriolum Rubrum (Shidan), Rhubarbi Radix et Rhizoma Chuan (Chuan Dahuang), Alumen (Baifan), Serpentis Skin (Shetui), Bufo bufo gargarizans dried secretion (Ganchan), Bombyx Batryticatus (Wancane'e), Litharge (Miduoseng) (each 1 liang above), Zha.
Finely chop the above herbs, place them in a porcelain jar, seal tightly, and roast until cooked. Remove, pound, and sieve into powder. Add Longnao (Borneol) and Shexiang (Musk), each 0.5 fen, and grind again until uniform and fine. First wash the affected area with warm water, then apply the powder. Use twice daily.
For treating all malignant sores, ding swellings, toxic sores, and other unrecognized sores, use the Diding Powder Formula:
Diding (Viola Yedoensis), Insect (Chong), Thorny Needles (Daogou Jizhen), Exposed Beehive (Lufengke), Serpentis Skin (Shetui), Setaria Italica Semen (Sumi), Panicum miliaceum Semen (Shumi), Cannabis Fructus (Damaren), Sojae Semen Nigrum (Heidou), Phaseoli Semen Rubrum (Chixiaodou), Disordered Hair (Luannfa), Zhe Yinzi.
Finely chop all the above herbs, wrap them in silkworm paper, soak in water for a long time, then filter out and dry. Burn on clean ground with charcoal until smoke ceases. Place in a new basin, cover with another basin, wait until cool, then finely grind and sieve into powder. If the lesion has formed a head with pus, apply the powder to cure it immediately. If no head has formed, mix one qian with wine and take orally.
For malignant sores of unknown name, apply the Rose Ointment (Qiangwei Gao):
Rosae Rugosae Flos (Qiangwei) (1 sheng chopped, branches in spring/summer, roots in autumn/winter), Minii Sublimatum (Qiandan) (15 liang, fried until purple), Pini Resina (Songzhi) (10 liang, refined).
Use three sheng of oil. First decoct Rosae Rugosae Flos until black, then remove dregs. Add Pini Resina and wait for it to melt. Filter through silk cloth. Add Minii Sublimatum. Simmer over low heat while stirring constantly until the color changes and it congeals into an ointment. Spread on a cloth patch and apply. Change twice daily.
For various malignant sores and swellings of unknown nature, use this White Dragon Ointment Formula (Bailong Gao):
Hydrargyrum Bichloridum (Nifen), Boswelliae Resina (Ruxiang) (0.5 liang, finely ground), Wet Lilii Bulbus (Shi Baihegen) (1 liang, mashed).
Mix and grind the above ingredients uniformly. For each application, first wash the sore cleanly with salted brine water. Apply the medicine onto thick paper and place on the sore. Patch twice daily.
Another formula:
Moschus (Shexiang) (1 qian, finely ground), Canis Faeces (Goushen) (1 liang), Equiseti Herba (Gujingcao) (1 liang, burnt to ash), Bufo bufo gargarizans dried secretion (Chan) (1 liang, burnt to ash), Hydrargyrum Bichloridum (Nifen) (1 qian).
Pound and sieve the above herbs into powder, grinding them uniformly. Mix with saliva and apply. Continue until healed.
For unrecognized malignant sores, or those accompanied by itching, use the Cnidium Powder Formula (Shechuang San):
Cnidii Fructus (Shechuangzi) (0.5 liang, powdered), Sulfur (Liuhuang) (0.5 liang, finely ground), Hydrargyrum (Shuiyin) (0.5 liang, ground with a small amount of ripe jujube pulp until mercury granules disappear).
Grind the above ingredients uniformly. Mix with lard rendered in the twelfth lunar month to a consistency like face cream. First wash the sore with a strong decoction of Broussonetia papyrifera root, dry it, and then apply the medicine.
Another formula:
Lard rendered in the twelfth lunar month (1 jin), Disordered Hair (like a duck egg in size), Fresh Crucian Carp (one fish, five cun long).
Decoct the above ingredients together until completely melted. Filter through silk cloth to remove dregs. Add Realgar (Xionghuang) and Sophorae Flavescentis Radix (Kushen) powders, each 0.5 liang, and one large Aconiti Radix Praeparata (Fuzi) powdered. Stir until uniform. Wait for it to solidify and apply twice daily.
Another formula:
Cnidii Fructus (Shechuangzi) (3 liang), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian) (2 liang, remove stamens).
Pound and sieve into powder. Mix with lard and apply. Use twice daily.
Another formula:
Take one fresh crucian carp, do not scale or clean it. Stuff a piece of disordered hair the size of a chicken egg into its mouth. Wrap in paper and burn to ash over charcoal. Grind finely. Separately, obtain gallbladder bile from a crucian carp and mix with the powder for topical application.
