Damp-type Hongjiaojiao (a condition characterized by lower limb swelling and pain caused by dampness) arises from bodily deficiency, sleeping in drafts or on damp surfaces, and seeking coolness after intoxication, resulting in wind-damp toxic qi attacking and binding at the feet and knees. This condition often stems from retained water in the Bladder (Bladder organ), causing obstruction and stagnation in the meridians, preventing free circulation, which initially presents as swelling and fullness that gradually attacks the heart and abdomen. If the toxic qi does not dissipate, it spreads to the four limbs causing pain, accompanied by restlessness and oppression in the chest and heart, rapid upper jiao breathing (asthma), coughing with thick sticky sputum, puffy face and eyes, abdominal and hypochondriac distension, vomiting upon seeing food, high fever and headache, constipation and dysuria, wind-toxin stagnation in the skin leading to sores. The hallmark symptom is swelling of the feet and knees, hence named Damp-type Hongjiaojiao.
Treatment for Damp-type Hongjiaojiao: If a patient has long resided in Central China and suddenly travels to outer regions, such as Jianghuai or Lingnan, or lives in high plateaus without prior exposure to dampness, failing to adapt to local soil and water, and dietary habits differ significantly, this may trigger an attack of Hongjiaojiao, characterized by occasional chest oppression, puffiness of the face and feet/knees, shortness of breath and fatigue, cyanosis of lips and mouth, and chest...
