Wei Qi (Defensive Qi) converges at Fengfu (GV16) once every day and night. At this time, the Cou Li (skin pores and interstices) open. When they open, pathogenic factors enter. Once pathogens enter, disease manifests. During these periods, Yin and Yang contend with each other. Depending on which aspect is stronger, chills and fever are generated. The timing of these episodes varies in early or late occurrence. If the Zang-Fu organs are invaded by pathogens, internal and external defenses fail, and pathogenic qi acts recklessly; thus, the onset and cessation occur without fixed timing.
