Huanju (Slow Carbuncle) is caused by cold pathogenic qi invading the meridians, leading to stagnation and obstruction of Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) qi, resulting in the accumulation and knotting of Qi and Blood. If the cold pathogen is severe, swelling and knotting occur with deep pain. The mass is round without a head or tail; large ones are like fists, small ones resemble plums or peaches. It adheres closely to the skin and flesh, with little heat sensation. The swelling resembles normal muscle tissue and is not very red. Because the accumulated swelling persists for a long time and the rotting of flesh is slow, it is named Huanju (Slow Carbuncle), also known as Rou Se Ju (Flesh-Color Carbuncle). Acute cases of Huanju can be fatal within one year, while chronic cases may take several years to prove fatal.
To treat Huanju (Slow Carbuncle) and various carbuncles and swellings characterized by the accumulation of pus and blood, hard and thick skin and flesh, failure to ulcerate after a long period, and pain, use Huangbai San (Phellodendron Powder).
Ingredients: Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, 3 fen, crushed), Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum, 3 fen), Xunlu Xiang (Boswelliae Fructus, 3 fen), Jiti Xiang (Caryophylli Flos, 0.5 liang), Lingyangjiao Xie (Saigae Tataricae Cornu, 1 liang), Loulu (Euphorbiae Humifusae Radix, 0.5 liang), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 3 fen), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, 0.5 liang, radix removed).
Process the above ingredients by crushing and sieving to make a powder. Take 4 qian per dose. Decoct with one zhong of water until reduced to 0.6 zhong. Strain and take warm at any time.
To treat Huanju (Slow Carbuncle) characterized by swelling and pain due to the accumulation of wind-heat toxic qi, and persistent alternating chills and fever, use Xijiao San (Rhinoceros Horn Powder).
Ingredients: Xijiao Xie (Rhinocerotis Cornu, 1 liang), Loulu (Euphorbiae Humifusae Radix, 1 liang), Chuan Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 1.5 liang, crushed and lightly stir-fried), Chuan Shengma ( Cimicifugae Rhizoma, 0.5 liang), Zhizi Ren (Gardeniae Fructus, 1 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang), Mucao (Viola Yedoensis, 1 liang).

To treat Huanju (Slow Carbuncle) and carbuncles where wind-toxin remains stagnant in the sinews and bones, taking a long time to discharge pus, accompanied by unceasing pain, slow pus discharge, or failure of the sore to generate new flesh, use Muxiang San (Aucklandiae Radix Powder).
Ingredients: Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix, 1.5 liang), Jiti Xiang (Caryophylli Flos, 1 liang), Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum, 1 liang), Xunlu Xiang (Boswelliae Fructus, 1 liang), Shexiang (Moschus, 1 fen, finely ground), Shegan (Belamcandae Rhizoma, 1 liang), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus, 1 liang), Sangjisheng (Taxilli Herba, 1 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang).

To treat Huanju (Slow Carbuncle) where wind-heat invasion causes persistent swelling, impending suppuration of the flesh, and vexatious heat in the four limbs, use Sheng Gansheng Dihuang San (Dried Rehmannia Powder).
Ingredients: Sheng Gansheng Dihuang (Dried Rehmanniae Radix, 2 liang), Chuan Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang, crushed and lightly stir-fried), Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 1 liang, radix removed), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 1 liang), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, 0.5 liang), Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix, 1 liang, crushed), Chi Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra, 1 liang).

Ingredients: Mangcao (Daphnes Genkwa Cortex, 1 liang), Zaojia (Gleditsiae Fructus, 2 tings, black skin and seeds removed), Lu Jiaoxie (Cervi Cornu Degelatinatum, 1 liang), Baiji (Bletillae Rhizoma, 1 liang), Bailian (Pseudostellariae Radix, 1 liang), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 1 liang), Tiannanxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma, 1 liang), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, 1 liang, raw, skin and navel removed), Shetui (Bombyx Batryticatus, 1 strip).
Process the above ingredients by fine sieving to make a powder. Mix with vinegar and flour paste to form a paste. Apply to the swollen area. Reapply when dry. Continue until the swelling dissipates.
To treat wind-toxin stagnation causing obstruction of Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) qi, leading to the formation of Huanju (Slow Carbuncle), aiming for internal resolution, apply Muxiang San (Aucklandiae Radix Paste).
