Fu Gu Ju (Bone-Attaching Carbuncle) is caused by sleeping exposed to wind, allowing wind pathogens to penetrate into the bone marrow and contend with internal heat. When further exposed to cold and dampness, or when sleeping outdoors during autumn and summer, the body is injured by cold. This causes wind-heat to lie dormant, condense, stagnate, and obstruct, attaching to the bones to form a carbuncle. It tends to occur in the spaces between large joints, as well as on the forehead and above the knees. Infants may also develop it on the elbows, back, and spine.
For adults suffering from acute Fu Gu Ju, characterized by crying out in pain:
To treat Fu Gu Ju with swelling, pain, pus formation, and chronic non-healing, use Tian Ling Gai San (Heavenly Skull Powder).
Tian Ling Gai (Human Cranium, 1 liang, calcined to ash)
Gou Tou Gu (Dog Skull Bone, 0.5 liang, calcined to ash)
Bai Fan (Alum, 0.5 liang, calcined until ash remains and juices are exhausted)
She Xiang (Musk, 1 qian, finely ground)
Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 1 fen, remove rootlets)
Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex, 1 fen)
Process the above herbs by pounding them into a fine powder through a silk sieve. Mix in the finely ground She Xiang evenly. For each application, first wash the affected area with a decoction of Gan Cao (Licorice Root), dry it thoroughly, then mix the powder with raw sesame oil and apply topically.
To treat Fu Gu Ju and all types of malignant sores, use the following prescription:
Niu Huang (Calculus Bovis, 1 fen, finely ground)
She Xiang (Musk, 1 fen, finely ground)
Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix, 1 fen)
Ding Xiang (Caryophylli Flos, 1 fen)
Xiang Zi (Lepidii Semen, 1 fen)
Ru Xiang (Olibanum, 1 fen, finely ground)
Zhu Sha (Cinnabaris, 1 fen, finely ground)
Xiong Huang (Realgar, 1 fen, finely ground)
Huang Dan (Minium, 1 fen)
Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex, 1 fen, sliced)
Ku Shen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix, 1 fen, sliced)
Process the above herbs by pounding them into a fine powder through a silk sieve. Add the pre-ground ingredients and grind together until uniform. Cut single-layer paper strips according to the size of the sore... [text fragment missing] ...apply the medicine onto the paper strip.
To treat Fu Gu Ju and cold-toxic sores, as well as all malignant sores:
Qiang Lang (Dung Beetle, 1 liang, calcined to ash)
Ba Dou (Crotonis Fructus, 0.5 liang, peel and remove heart, grind and press between paper to remove oil)
Grind the above ingredients together into a fine powder and apply to the sore. Change once daily. For long-standing cases, efficacy is usually achieved within three applications.
For chronic non-healing Fu Gu Ju that recurs after healing, with bone extrusion from the sore opening:
Mix Zhu Dan (Porcine Bile) with Qiu Ye (Firmiana Leaf), pound into a paste, and apply as a poultice.
Another prescription:
Use natural juice of Gou Qi Zi (Lycii Fructus), simmer slowly over low heat until it becomes a concentrated syrup. Add refined Bai Fan (Alum), shape into firm pills, and dry in the shade. Pound into powder. First wash the wound with Gan Cao (Licorice Root) water, dry it, moisten the sore with saliva, and apply the powder evenly around the lesion.
To treat swollen and painful Fu Gu Ju, use Zao Jia Gao (Ziziphus Spinosae Fruit Ointment):
Zao Jia (Ziziphi Spinosae Fructus, 10 pods, processed with Mi Wu [Pimpinellae Radix] until melted, finely ground)
Wu Zhu Yu (Evodiae Fructus, 2 liang, powdered)
Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, 1 liang, soaked in hot water, peeled, roasted, and ground into a paste)
Shui Yin (Hydrargyrum, 1 liang, ground with Li Zao Reng [Jujube Pulp] until the mercury stars disappear)
Boil the above ingredients in 3 sheng of vinegar, reducing the Zao Jia decoction to 1.5 sheng. Filter out the dregs. Add Wu Zhu Yu and Xing Ren, and simmer over gentle heat until an ointment forms. Then add Shui Yin (Hydrargyrum) and mix uniformly. Store in a watertight container. Apply the ointment spread on old cloth to the affected area.
For Fu Gu Ju that has not healed for many years:
Nian You Jiao (Old Greasy Foot Residue/Fat, 1 liang)
Zhu Gui Sui (Porcine Marrow, 1 liang)
She Xiang (Musk, 1 qian, finely ground)
Grind all ingredients into an ointment and apply to the sore.
To treat Fu Gu Ju and Yu Yan Chuang (Fish-Eye Sore):
Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, 50 seeds, calcined to ash)
Luan Fa Hui (Ash of Tangled Hair, 1 liang)
Ni Fen (Calomel, 1 fen)
Grind the above ingredients finely. Add 3 he of oil and 0.5 liang of beeswax. Heat and stir until uniform. Store in a porcelain box. Clean the area before application.
Another prescription:
Use 7 Qiang Lang (Dung Beetles), mix with Da Mai Mian (Barley Flour), pound into a paste, and apply as a poultice.
Another prescription:
Burn a dog head and fumigate the affected area with the smoke.
Another prescription:
Use 5 Ji Zi (Chicken Eggs). Boil until cooked, separate the yolk from the white. Stir-fry the yolks in a ding pot over low heat until blackened. Allow to naturally transform into an ointment. Pour into a cup. Add 3 qian of Huang Dan (Minium) and Ni Fen (Calomel), and mix uniformly. Before each use, wash the affected area with rice washing water (Mi Tan), dry it, and apply the medicine. This method is highly effective.
Another prescription:
Qiang Lang (Dung Beetle, dried)
Pound into a fine powder through a silk sieve. First apply Wu Ji Zhi (Fat of Black Hen) to the sore opening, then dust with the powder.
For Fu Gu Ju that does not heal, recurs, and involves bone extrusion from the sore opening, use this prescription:
Yi Sui Wu Ci Ji Gu (Bone of one-year-old female black chicken, 1 liang, calcined to ash)
San Jia Tong Cai Jian (Wood chips from paulownia trees of three different households [specifically coffin wood], 1 liang, calcined to ash)
San Jia Chui Cao Jian (Cooking grass/straw from three different households, 1 liang, calcined to ash)
Grind all ingredients finely. Take a small amount and insert it into the sore. Once the fragmented bone is expelled, the condition will heal.
