Medicines with severe toxicity must not come into contact with the mouth, nose, ears, or eyes of humans; otherwise, they are fatal. There are two main types: one is Gouwen (Gelsemium elegans), which grows in Zhuya; the other is Zhen (a legendary poisonous bird), also known as Hu. It resembles a black eagle and lives in the sea, with yellow feathers.
When Gouwen toxin enters the body, the pulse is floating, large, and surging. Upon onset, there is aversion to cold, slight headache, dry retching, tightness and urgency in the back, trismus (lockjaw) with unconscious biting of the tongue, constipation and difficulty in urination, and the complexion, eye sockets, lips, corners of the mouth, and fingernails all turn cyanotic.
Another type is Danggucao poison. Upon onset, there is trismus and dryness of the mouth, inability to speak due to tongue stiffness, pain in the throat as if pierced by awls or knives, intense heat in the chest, and fullness and oppression in the scapular region. If death does not occur within one hundred days, the body, lips, corners of the mouth, and dorsum of the hands and feet will turn cyanotic before death ensues.
Yet another type is Wutou poison. Upon onset, there is stiffness of the throat and eye pain, a foul odor perceived from the nose, heaviness in the hands and feet, frequent vomiting, internal heat and oppression in the abdomen, cyanosis of the lips and corners of the mouth, and a complexion that alternates between cyanotic and red. Death occurs after one hundred days.
Generally, individuals with dark skin, large bones, and plump flesh have thick Stomach Qi and can withstand toxicity. Conversely, thin individuals have weak Stomach Qi and cannot withstand toxicity.
To treat poisoning by local barbarian drugs, before administering any antidote, establish the following prescription:
Shengjiang (Radix Zingiberis Recens, four liang, sliced) Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, three liang, raw, crushed)
Take four large bowls of water, decoct until two bowls remain, strain the dregs, and divide into three doses. After consumption, proceed with conditioning therapy.
Another prescription:
Huangteng (Caulis Tinosporae, ten liang, crushed; available throughout Lingnan)
Take one dou of water, boil until two sheng remain, and divide into three doses. After consumption, the internal drug toxin will dissipate naturally. It is said that regular consumption of this vine prevents poisoning from occurring.
Another prescription:
Dulin Teng (Caulis Dulin, ten liang, crushed; available throughout Lingnan, recognized by locals)
Take five large bowls of water and two large bowls of wine, decoct together until three bowls remain, and divide into six doses. Take them sequentially. After completion, the toxins will be expelled via urine. Avoid toxic foods for ten days.
Another prescription:
Gan Lanshi (Fructus Isatidis, four liang) Baihua Teng (Caulis Hedyotis, four liang, crushed; those from Junzhou are superior; do not casually consume Yege)
Take two large bowls of water and one large bowl of wine, decoct until one bowl remains, strain the dregs, and take two warm doses on an empty stomach. The condition will resolve. Alternatively, grind Gan Lanshi into powder and frequently decoct it in water.
Another prescription:
Dulin Teng (Caulis Dulin, five liang, crushed)
Place in a jar with five large bowls of wine, seal tightly with honey, and roast around the sides using chaff fire until it boils three to five times. Allow to cool, then extract. Take warm. Maintain a sensation of alcohol in the body.
For cases where one has unavoidably consumed food prepared by locals:
Use one cun of raw Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), chew thoroughly and swallow. If the consumer has been poisoned, they will immediately vomit. This treats internal drug poisoning; follow the previous methods for treatment, and the condition will resolve. It is customary to carry Gancao in a small pouch.
