On the first day of cold damage disease, the Taiyang (Greater Yang) channel is affected. If the pulse is calm, the pathogen has not transmitted to other zang-fu organs; if irritability and a desire to vomit occur, and the pulse is rapid and tense, it indicates transmission to other organs. Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) is indicated.
When Taiyang disease occurs, symptoms include headache, stiffness in the neck and nape, and aversion to cold, with a floating and rapid pulse. Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) is indicated.
In Taiyang disease accompanied by wind-strike, fever and aversion to cold occur. Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) is indicated.
The pulse of Taiyang disease with wind-strike shows a floating and weak Yang pulse (cun position). Floating indicates spontaneous heat; weak indicates spontaneous sweating. Symptoms include slight aversion to cold, mild fever as if covered by feathers, nasal congestion, and dry retching. Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) is indicated.
Taiyang disease presents with fever and sweating, indicating weak Ying (Nutritive) Qi and strong Wei (Defensive) Qi, leading to sweating. To expel the pathogen, Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) should be administered again.
If Taiyang disease is mistakenly treated with purgation and vital energy rushes upward, Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) may be given.
After inducing sweating for Taiyang disease, if sweating continues excessively, the patient will likely experience aversion to cold, difficulty urinating, and spasticity of the four limbs. Guizhi Fuzi Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Aconite Decoction) is indicated.
If Taiyang disease is mistakenly treated with purgation, resulting in a hurried pulse and chest fullness, Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) is indicated.
When the exterior syndrome of Taiyang disease is unresolved, purgation must not be used. Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) should be taken to induce sweating and resolve the exterior.
If Taiyang disease remains unresolved after mistaken purgation, but the pulse is still floating, the pathogen is still at the exterior. Sweating will cure it. Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) is indicated.
If fever and irritability persist after administering Guizhi Tang for Taiyang disease, Fengchi (GB20) and Fengfu (GV16) acupoints should be needled first, followed by Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction), which will lead to recovery.
Spontaneous sweating in Taiyang disease indicates harmonious Ying (Nutritive) Qi but disharmonious Wei (Defensive) Qi. Ying Qi circulates within the vessels, while Wei Qi circulates outside. Re-inducing sweating will harmonize the exterior and cure the disease. Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) is indicated.
Frequent fever and unresolved sweating in Taiyang disease indicate disharmonious Wei (Defensive) Qi. Re-inducing sweating will cure it. Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) is indicated.
After resolving Taiyang disease through sweating, if irritability recurs half a day later with a floating and rapid pulse, sweating may be induced again. Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) is indicated.
In combined Taiyang and Yangming disease, wheezing and chest fullness occur; purgation is contraindicated. Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction) is indicated.
Taiyang disease presenting with a floating-tight pulse, absence of sweating, fever, body pain, irritability, and a desire to keep eyes closed, where severe cases may experience epistaxis (nosebleed) as a sign of impending resolution, requires Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction).
Taiyang disease with headache, fever, body and joint pain, aversion to wind, absence of sweating, and wheezing indicates Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction).
For Taiyang disease with a floating and rapid pulse, sweating may be induced. Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction) is indicated.
In combined Taiyang and Yangming disease with spontaneous diarrhea, Shu Fu Tang (Atractylodes Macrocephala and Aconite Decoction) is indicated.
In combined Taiyang and Yangming disease without diarrhea but with vomiting, Gegen Banxia Tang (Kudzu Root and Pinellia Decoction) is indicated.
Taiyang disease with stiffness in the neck and back, absence of sweating, and aversion to wind indicates Mahuang Tang (Ephedra Decoction).
Taiyang wind-strike with a floating-tight pulse, fever, aversion to cold, and body pain indicates Da Qing Long Tang (Great Blue Dragon Decoction).
Taiyang disease with a floating-slow pulse, no body pain but heaviness (which may occasionally lighten), and absence of Shaoyin syndrome, may be treated with Da Qing Long Tang (Great Blue Dragon Decoction).
When the exterior of Taiyang disease is unresolved and there is fluid retention in the heart region, causing dry retching and fever, or thirst, diarrhea, lower abdominal fullness, or wheezing, Xiao Qing Long Tang (Minor Blue Dragon Decoction) is indicated.
After sweating resolves Taiyang disease, if fever persists, palpitations, dizziness, and tremors of the body muscles occur, Xuan Wu Tang (Black Tortoise Decoction, also known as Zhen Wu Tang) is indicated.
If Taiyang disease is unresolved and heat binds in the Bladder, causing manic behavior, and blood passes spontaneously, but the exterior remains unresolved, attack on the interior is premature. The exterior should be resolved first with Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction). Once the exterior is resolved and binding remains in the lower abdomen, the interior can be attacked with Tao Ren Cheng Qi Tang (Peach Kernel and Rhubarb Decoction).
If Taiyang disease is mistakenly purged, leading to persistent dysentery and sweating, Gegen Huanglian Tang (Kudzu Root and Coptis Decoction) is indicated.
After emesis, purgation, and sweating for Taiyang disease, if mild irritability, frequent urination, and hard stool occur, Xiao Cheng Qi Tang (Minor Order the Qi Decoction) may be used.
After excessive sweating in Taiyang disease, dryness in the Stomach causes irritability and insomnia. The patient desires water; provide small amounts frequently until Stomach Qi harmonizes and recovery occurs. If the pulse is floating, urination is free, and there is slight fever and thirst, Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) is indicated.
After sweating in Taiyang disease, if the pulse becomes floating and rapid and thirst recurs, Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) is indicated.
Taiyang disease with sweating and thirst indicates Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria); if there is no thirst, Lingzao San (Poria Powder) is indicated.
In combined Taiyang and Shaoyin disease with spontaneous diarrhea, Huangqin Tang (Scutellaria Decoction) is indicated; if vomiting occurs, Banxia Shengjiang Tang (Pinellia and Fresh Ginger Decoction) is added.
Abdominal fullness after sweating in Taiyang disease indicates Nongpo Tang (Magnolia Bark Decoction).
Epigastric stuffiness and fullness after sweating in Taiyang disease indicates Xiexin Tang (Drain the Epigastrium Decoction).
After sweating in Taiyang disease, if Stomach disharmony causes epigastric stuffiness and hardness, belching with food odor, fluid retention under the costal region, borborygmus, and diarrhea, Banxia Xiexin Tang (Pinellia and Draining the Epigastrium Decoction) is indicated.
If the exterior of Taiyang disease is unresolved and multiple purgations have been performed, leading to heat-bound dysentery that persists with epigastric stuffiness and simultaneous exterior-interior involvement, Guizhi Renshen Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Ginseng Decoction) is indicated.
