Yellow disease manifests as generalized body pain and fever, with a sallow complexion lacking luster. After seven or eight days, high fever occurs, accompanied by bleeding from the mouth; purgative therapy should be employed. The excrement resembles pig liver. If the patient experiences fullness and urgency in the lower abdomen, dry and painful eyes, nasal bone pain, stiffness in both shoulders and neck, and tightness in the waist and back, this indicates yellow disease. Patients with yellow disease typically suffer from constipation; if urination is made smooth, death need not be feared. However, if bowel movements are not facilitated, constipation will lead to chest and abdominal distension and restlessness. This arises because cold-dampness remains on the exterior, causing heat to accumulate in the Spleen and Stomach. When the Cou Li (skin pores) fail to open, stagnant heat combats with undigested food residues, leading to stifling depression that cannot dissipate, resulting in obstruction of both urination and defecation. Consequently, the body and face turn yellow. In all cases of yellow disease, if the Cun Kou pulse (radial artery at the wrist) near the palm is imperceptible, and the breath from the mouth and nose is cold, the condition is incurable.
Ji Huang (Acute Yellow Disease) results from heat in the Spleen and Stomach, where grain qi stagnates and steams, compounded by the invasion of toxic heat. Thus, jaundice appears suddenly, accompanied by chest fullness and panting, with life hanging in the balance for an instant, hence the name "Acute Yellow." Some patients exhibit only yellowing of the body and face upon illness onset, unaware it is jaundice until after death when the entire body and face are found to be yellow. Its initial symptoms include fever and palpitations/trembling of the heart; this constitutes Ji Huang.
To treat Ji Huang characterized by irritability, thirst with desire to drink water, and a golden-yellow hue of the face and eyes, use Long Dan San (Gentian Powder).
Long Dan Gen (Radix Gentianae, 1 liang, remove rhizome) Mu Tong (Caulis Akebiae, 1 liang, sliced) Tu Gua Gen (Radix Trichosanthis Kirilowii, 1 liang) Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 2 liang) Xi Jiao (Cornu Rhinocerotis, 1 liang, shaved) Zhi Zi Ren (Semen Gardeniae, 1 liang) Chuan Da Huang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, 1 liang, sliced and lightly stir-fried) Mao Gen (Rhizoma Imperatae, one handful, sliced) Chuan Po Xiao (Natrii Sulfas, 1 liang).
The above ingredients are crushed, sifted, and made into a powder. Take 5 qian per dose, decoct in 1 da zhen (approx. 200ml) of water until reduced to 0.5 da zhen, strain, and take warm at any time.
To treat Ji Huang with irritability in the heart and diaphragm, and red, painful eyes, use Xi Jiao San (Rhinoceros Horn Powder).

To treat Ji Huang with a body color resembling gold, use Chi Xiao Dou San (Adzuki Bean Powder).
Chi Xiao Dou (Semen Phaseoli, 1 liang) Ding Xiang (Flos Caryophylli, 1 fen) Shu Mi (Semen Setariae Italicae, 1 fen) Gua Di (Fructus Momordicae, 0.5 ban) Xun Lu Xiang (Olibanum, 1 qian) Qing Bu (Blue Cloth, 5 cun, burnt to ash) She Xiang (Moschus, 1 qian, finely ground).
The above ingredients are finely crushed, sifted, and mixed evenly. Take 1 qian per dose at any time, mixed with clear rice soup. Alternatively, insufflate a small amount into the nose; discharge of yellow fluid indicates efficacy.
To treat Ji Huang with vexatious heat and pain in the head, eyes, and limbs, dark red urine, difficult defecation, and mental restlessness preventing sleep, use Bai Xian Pi San (Dictamnus Powder).
Bai Xian Pi (Cortex Dictamni, 0.5 liang) Chuan Sheng Ma (Radix Bupleuri, 0.5 liang) Chuan Po Xiao (Natrii Sulfas, 1 liang) Yin Chen (Herba Artemisiae Scopariae, 1 liang) Huang Qin (Radix Scutellariae, 0.5 liang) Zhi Zi Ren (Semen Gardeniae, 0.5 liang) Da Qing (Folium Isatidis, 0.5 liang) Chuan Da Huang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, 2 liang, sliced and lightly stir-fried) Ge Gen (Puerariae Radix, 0.5 liang, sliced).

Mix the above ingredients, decoct until reduced to 0.6 da zhen, strain, and take warm in one dose.

Gua Di (Fructus Momordicae, 1 he) Chi Xiao Dou (Semen Phaseoli, 1 he).
The above ingredients are finely crushed, sifted, and made into a powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mixed with warm rice water. Vomiting should occur shortly; if no vomiting occurs after walking five li, administer again. For mild cases, insufflate an amount equivalent to two or three bean-sized particles into the nose; copious discharge of yellow fluid from the nose indicates efficacy.
For Ji Huang and Xin Huang (Heart Jaundice) manifesting as manic running and unrelenting irritability:
Sheng Ji Zi (Raw Chicken Egg, 2 eggs, discard yolk, use white only) Chuan Po Xiao (Natrii Sulfas, 0.5 liang, finely ground).
Mix the above ingredients, cook thoroughly, mix well, and take in one dose. Effective.
