Discussion on Spontaneous Sweating after Cold Damage: For spontaneous sweating occurring after cold damage, one may administer Musli San (Oyster Shell Powder), Zhi Han San (Stop-Sweating Powder), or combine Jia He San (Harmonizing Grain Powder) with Huangqi Jianzhong Tang (Astragalus Decoction for Replenishing the Middle) added with Ginseng. Alternatively, Renshen Danggui San (Ginseng and Angelica Powder) may be decocted together with Wheat.
Discussion on Spontaneous Diarrhea after Cold Damage: For abdominal pain, spontaneous diarrhea, and cold extremities following cold damage, one may administer Lizhong Wan (Regulate the Middle Pill) and similar formulas; refer to the section on Abdominal Pain for details.
Discussion on Jaundice after Cold Damage: For jaundice affecting the eyes and whole body, difficult urination, or sweating only on the head after cold damage, Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Poria Powder) may be given. Crush a small amount of Shan Yinchen (Artemisia Capillaris Herb) and Shan Zhizi (Gardenia Fruit), totaling two qian, decoct in water to make a soup, and take orally in large amounts for efficacy.
Discussion on Abdominal Fullness after Cold Damage: For abdominal fullness after cold damage, loss of appetite, indigestion after eating, or distension in the abdomen and hypochondrium, Yunqi San (Qi-Balancing Powder), Chenxiang Jiangqi Tang (Aucklandia Qi-Descending Decoction), Pengjian Wan (Pengjian Pill), Sixi Wan (Appetite-Stimulating Pill), or Shenling Baizhu San (Ginseng, Atractylodes, and Poria Powder) may be administered. In severe cases, Qingmuxiang Wan (Blue Magnolia Fruit Pill) is given, combined with Jiahe San, Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction), Muxiang Fenqi Wan (Aucklandia Qi-Distributing Pill), Muxiang San (Aucklandia Powder), or Muxiang Liqi Yin (Aucklandia Qi-Circulating Decoction), used according to deficiency or excess patterns.
Discussion on Dysentery after Cold Damage: Dysentery following cold damage is mostly due to heat patterns, presenting as passing pure pus or pure blood. Huanglian Ejiao Wan (Coptis and Donkey-Hide Gelatin Pill) or Chuzheng Wan (Stopping Dysentery Pill) may be administered. If bleeding is predominant, Diyü San (Sanguisorba Powder) and Weifeng Tang (Stomach Wind Decoction) may be taken concurrently.
Discussion on Dampness Invasion during Cold Damage: When cold damage causes generalized body pain, inability to turn over, vexing bone and joint pain, difficult urination, loose stools, and sweating on the forehead, this indicates dampness invasion. One should take Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Poria Powder) frequently to promote urination, followed by Shufu Tang (Aconite and Atractylodes Decoction).
Discussion on Post-Cold Damage Regulation: Cold damage itself does not require tonification; overly warm tonifying herbs should not be used. Excessive tonification may cause recurrent fever. Only mildly warm herbs should be used for regulation, such as Shenling Baizhu San (Ginseng, Atractylodes, and Poria Powder). For the weak and elderly, Jiahe San (Harmonizing Grain Powder) and similar formulas are suitable for regulation.
Discussion on Summerheat Injury Patterns: Summerheat injury in summer is also called latent summerheat. This occurs when a person moves from a hot environment to a cool place for sitting or lying down, unaware that external cold air closes the pores, trapping summerheat qi within the couli (interstices of skin and muscle) where it cannot dissipate. Symptoms include spontaneous sweating and aversion to cold, or aversion to cold in the back with thirst, greasy facial appearance resembling an unwashed face, or dryness of the incisors. Vomiting, regurgitation, and thirst, or the inability to lie flat on a bed, indicate summerheat injury. Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Poria Powder), Guihua Wan (Osmanthus Pill), Dashun San (Great Smooth Powder), or Xiangru San (Elsholtzia Powder) may be administered. For severe fever, Xiangru San (Elsholtzia Powder), Zhuye Tang (Bamboo Leaf Decoction), Pipaye San (Loquat Leaf Powder), or Xiaochaihu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) taken cold will produce immediate effects.
Discussion on Vomiting and Diarrhea due to Summerheat: For vomiting due to heatstroke, fever with mental restlessness, or cholera-like vomiting and diarrhea, Xiaoshu Wan (Summerheat-Relieving Pill), Wuling San (Five-Ingredient Poria Powder), Guiling Wan (Cinnamon and Poria Pill), or Xiangru San (Elsholtzia Powder) may be administered.
Discussion on Phlegm Retention Patterns: Phlegm retained in the chest and diaphragm can cause aversion to cold with high fever, aversion to wind with spontaneous sweating, and throat discomfort, but without headache or body pain. Jinfeicao San (Boilweed Powder), Xiaoyin Wan (Phlegm-Resolving Pill), Chensha Huatan Wan (Cinnabar Phlegm-Transforming Pill), or Beizhu Wan (Double-Atractylodes Pill) may be administered.
Discussion on Food Stagnation Patterns: Conditions presenting with headache, fever, aversion to cold, abdominal fullness, vomiting, absence of body pain, but with limb fatigue are not cold damage. These are food stagnation cases located in the intestines and stomach. Yinggan Wan (Induction Pill), Dusheng Wan (Single Hero Pill), Pengjian Wan (Pengjian Pill), Jiahe San (Harmonizing Grain Powder), or Sixi Wan (Appetite-Stimulating Pill) may be administered; all food-stagnation resolving formulas are applicable. For qi deficiency or the elderly, Wuji San (Five Accumulations Powder) may be taken, swallowing Qingmuxiang Wan (Blue Magnolia Fruit Pill) or Shunqi San (Qi-Smooth Powder).
