Treatment for latent summerheat, presenting with bloody stool resembling chronic dysentery. In the second year of Chongning (1103 AD), while serving as the Director of Transportation after being transferred from the Temple of Grand Sacrifices, I suffered from dysentery from summer through autumn for two months, defecating thirty to forty times a day and night. However, the blood was profuse while the white mucus was scant. Famous physicians all diagnosed this as dysentery. Hearing that Li Zhonghe, an Assistant Instructor from Qingyang Town in Sizhou, was skilled in medicine, I sent for him. Upon examining my pulse, Li immediately stated, "This is not dysentery." Initially, I was very angry, but upon further inquiry, Li said, "Profuse blood with scant white mucus, combined with scanty and difficult urination, indicates it is not dysentery." His words accurately described my condition, and I was convinced and amazed. This illness originated from latent summerheat; the abnormal transfer of urine into the large intestine passed through the Heart Meridian, transforming into blood, which was discharged via both bowel movements and urination. Thus, the symptoms resembled dysentery but were not. Healing would occur once urination and defecation returned to their respective normal pathways.
Tongcao (Lophatheri Herba), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis) (each 0.5 liang), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) (1 fen), Zhuru (Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam) (2 qian, used sparingly, halved for the elderly).
The above herbs are cut into pieces the size of rice grains or ground into fine powder. When cutting, weigh out 3 qian per dose, add one *zhan* of water, decoct until reduced to 7/10, and take warm. If taking the fine powder, each dose should be appropriate. After administration, peace is restored, hence recorded for long-term transmission.
Treatment for latent summerheat, whether vomiting or diarrhea, effective.
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (1 jin, cleaned), Chen Cang Mi (aged stored rice) (2 sheng, moistened with two bowls of water).
Place the above ingredients in a pot and cook using the method for steaming rice, until the rice is cooked. Dry them and grind into powder. Form pills with water, sized like Sophora seeds. Take 30–50 pills per dose, washed down with rice soup, at any time.
Relief of summerheat toxicity.
Tanxiang (Santalum Album Lignum), Xingren (Prunus Armeniaca Semen, peeled) (2.5 qian), Wumei Rou (Mume Fructus Flesh) (2 liang), Zisu Ye (Perillae Folium) (1 liang), Huixiang (Foeniculi Fructus) (3.5 qian), Bai [text incomplete].
Grind the above herbs into fine powder, bind with refined honey to form pills the size of a marble. Contain and dissolve orally between meals.
Treatment for middle heat, five-palms vexation and irritability, cholera-like vomiting, dry mouth with excessive thirst, and obstruction of body fluids.
Bai Mei (white plum fruit) (29 pieces), Tanxiang (Santalum Album Lignum) (3 liang), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (4 liang), Yan (Salt) (5 liang).
Grind the above herbs into fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose, add 5 slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), 7 leaves of Qingzhuye (green bamboo leaf), and 100 grains of Jingmi (Oryza Sativa Germine), decoct with water, and take.
