The *Mai Jing* (Pulse Classic) states: During the sixth or seventh month of pregnancy, if the pulse is solid and large (*Shi Da*), firm and strong (*Lao Qiang*), wiry and tight (*Xian Jin*), it indicates vitality and the fetus will survive; if the pulse is deep and fine (*Chen Xi*), it indicates death. A uniform and fine pulse suggests easy delivery; a large, floating, and slow pulse with scattered qi indicates difficult delivery.
The *Mai Jue* (Pulse Rhymes) states: For women in labor, the pulse deviates from the normal pattern (*Li Jing*), appearing deep, fine, and slippery. Pain felt at midnight predicts birth by noon the next day. If the body feels heavy, there is fever, and frequent chills occur, along with blackish-green sublingual veins, these are ominous signs. If the tongue becomes cold and curled up, the fetus will die; severe abdominal pain portends the mother's demise. If the face is red but the tongue is cyanotic, careful examination reveals that while the mother may survive, the fetus likely will not. If both lips and mouth turn cyanotic and froth is expelled, both mother and fetus are likely to die. If the face is cyanotic but the tongue is red, with frequent frothing, it definitively indicates maternal death with fetal survival.
The *Da Quan* (Great Compendium) states: Overeating combined with exposure to wind and cold causes disharmony between yin and yang, leading to the interference of clear and turbid qi, a condition termed Huoluan (Cholera-like disorder). Some cases present with vomiting first, or abdominal pain with vomiting and diarrhea, indicating heat pathogenesis. If accompanied by headache, body ache, and fever, it involves wind pathogens. If wind-cold constricts the skin, qi fails to circulate freely, and wind-heat rushes upward causing headache. If wind enters the stomach and intestines, it causes diarrhea and vomiting; in severe cases, cold extremities appear due to sudden exhaustion of yang qi, known as "Si Ni" (Four Coldness). In pregnant women, this condition often damages the fetus.
Wan Mizhai stated: Huoluan is a disease name of the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. It arises because daily consumption of rich flavors and fatty foods leads to rotting accumulation and phlegm formation, compounded by emotional stagnation transforming qi into fire, which stagnates in the stomach. Suddenly triggered by external cold or heat, evil and righteous qi contend, and yin and yang mix chaotically, causing severe colic in the heart and abdomen, simultaneous vomiting and diarrhea, and chaotic disruption, hence named Huoluan. If the pathogen is in the Upper Wan, pain centers on the epigastrium with predominant vomiting; if in the Lower Wan, pain centers on the umbilicus with predominant diarrhea; if in the Middle Wan, abdominal pain occurs with both severe vomiting and diarrhea. Excessive vomiting injures qi, excessive diarrhea injures blood. Once qi and blood are injured, they cannot nourish the fetus. Furthermore, the pathogenic factor agitates the fetal origin, making it unlikely for the mother to survive. This is a critical and malignant syndrome requiring urgent treatment, preferably managed with Xiangsu San (Fragrant Perilla Powder) added with Huoxiang (Agastache Herba).
