Answer: Yang exerts its influence, and Yin transforms it. When essence (Jing) is abundant and surplus, twins may be conceived. The *Mai Jing* (Pulse Classic) states: "If the pulses on both left and right sides are rapid, it indicates twins." It further states: "If both pulses are deep and solid, two male children will be born; if both pulses are floating and large, two female children will be born." Moreover, while the fetus resides in the uterus (Bao), it is nourished by Qi and Blood. If cold and heat are regulated appropriately and Qi and Blood are robust, there will be no harm. However, if there is imbalance in cold and heat, leading to damage and weakness of Qi and Blood, the fetus may wither and dry up, failing to develop. Some pregnancies may extend beyond the expected term without delivery. In cases of twins exposed to cold, where meridian nourishment is insufficient, one twin may suffer premature death or injury. Upon palpation, if the area above the fetus feels cold, it indicates that the fetus has died. This is analogous to a hen incubating eggs: those receiving adequate warmth survive (referred to as 'Lu' or fortune/life), while those lacking warmth often perish or exhibit signs of distress, which is precisely what this refers to.
Gan Di Huang Wan (Rehmannia Pill): Treats pregnancy complicated by deficiency of Qi and Blood, resulting in poor fetal development.
Prepared Rehmannia Root (Shu Di Huang, 1 liang), Ligusticum Rhizome (Chuan Xiong), Poria (Fu Ling), Ginseng Root (Ren Shen), Angelica Sinensis Radix (Dang Gui) [each 5 fen], Bupleurum Root (Chai Hu, 0.5 liang), Cirsium Japonicum Herba (Ci Ji), Taxillus Chinensis Caulis (Sang Ji Sheng) [each 0.5 liang], Magnolia Bark (Nou Pu, 1 liang), Dragon Bone (Long Gu), Donkey-hide Gelatin (E Jiao) [each 3 fen], Alumen Rubrum (Bai Shi Zhi, 3 fen), Astragalus Membranaceus Root (Huang Qi, 0.5 liang), Licorice Root (Gan Cao, 1 fen, honey-fried).
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Mix with honey and pound for 200–300 strokes until uniform. Form pills the size of tung tree seeds. Take 30 pills each time, washed down with clear porridge soup. Time of administration is not restricted.
Xiong Huang Wan (Realgar Pill): Treats "ghost pregnancy" (pseudo-pregnancy or molar pregnancy characterized by abnormal bleeding), causing recurrent discharge of dark blood from the abdomen and abdominal pain.
Realgar (Xiong Huang, finely ground), Podophyllum Emodi Rhizoma et Radix (Gui Jiu, remove hairs and heart; some texts say Lei Jiu), Polygonum Aristolochiifolium Herba (Mang Cao), Cinnabar (Dan Sha, finely ground), Croton Seed (Ba Dou, remove skin and heart, finely processed), Hydrinae Cor (Ta Gan, roasted until yellow), Centipede (Wu Gong, 1 piece, roasted until yellow), Gecko (Xi Yi, 1 piece, roasted until yellow) [each 0.5 liang].
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Mix with refined honey and pound for 300 strokes. Form pills the size of tung tree seeds. Take 2 pills on an empty stomach with warm wine. Administer twice daily. After ingestion, diarrhea should occur. If diarrhea does not occur, increase the dose to 3 pills. Initially, clear water will be discharged, followed by numerous worm-like strands resembling horse tails.
In severe cases, snake-like worms, or substances resembling shrimp eggs, chicken eggs, white paste, or bean juice may be discharged. All such pathological conditions will be cured.
Bai Zhu San (Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder): Regulates and tonifies the Chong and Ren vessels, nourishes and benefits Blood, and harmonizes and protects the uterine organ.
Oyster Shell (Mu Li, 3 fen), Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizoma (Bai Zhu, 4 fen), Ligusticum Rhizome (Chuan Xiong, 4 fen), Sichuan Pepper (Chuan Jiao, remove eyes, stir-fry, 3 fen).
Treats pregnancy with twins where one has died and the other is alive. This formula facilitates the expulsion of the deceased fetus and ensures the safety of the living one. This prescription is miraculous and infallible.
Crab Claws (Xie Zhua, 1 sheng), Licorice Root (Gan Cao, 2 chi, honey-fried), Donkey-hide Gelatin (E Jiao, 3 liang).
Use 1 dou of flowing water from the east. First decoct the first two ingredients, reduce to 3 sheng of liquid. Add the gelatin and melt it completely. Consume in one dose. If unable to consume at once, divide into two doses. If the patient is unconscious, pry open the mouth and administer the medicine; upon entry, life will be restored. Decoction should be prepared facing east, using straw and reed wood as fuel.
