Answer: The Kidney is the official of vigorous action, and dexterity arises from it. It forms an interior-exterior relationship with the Bladder. In men, the Kidney stores essence; in women, it anchors the uterus (Bao Gong). Qixuanzi stated: Because its function is strong, it is called "Zuoqiang" (Vigorous Action); because its creation describes subtlety, it is called "Jiqiao" (Dexterity). In women, this manifests as Jiqiao; in men, it manifests as Zuoqiang. Tian Lin (a type of strangury) is caused by Kidney deficiency combined with Bladder heat. Kidney deficiency fails to control water, resulting in frequent urination. Exogenous heat invades the Bladder, causing urine flow to become astringent. Being both astringent and frequent leads to dribbling without relief. During pregnancy, the uterus is anchored by the Kidney. If the Kidney suffers from deficient heat leading to strangury, it is termed "Zi Lin" (Fetal Strangury).
For treating Zi Lin during pregnancy, characterized by frequent but scanty urination, or accompanied by hot pain and soreness:
Di Fu Cao (Kochia Scoparia Herb, 3 liang, boiled in 4 sheng of water to yield 2.5 sheng, taken in three doses).
To treat Zi Lin during pregnancy, Di Fu Tang is suitable:
Di Fu Cao (Kochia Scoparia Herb), Che Qian Zi (Plantago Seed) (each 3 liang); Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Chi Fu Ling (Poria with Red Coir), Chi Shao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Zhi Shi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, processed with honey), Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Tong Cao (Tetrapanacis Medulla), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, processed with honey) (each 2 liang).
Crush the herbs. Take 4 qian per dose, with 1.5 cups of water, decoct to 0.8 cup, remove dregs, and take warm on an empty stomach. If Di Fu Cao is unavailable, juice from Abelmoschus manihot root is also excellent.
Shi Wei San: Treats postpartum dribbling strangury and hematuria.
Shi Wei (Pyrrosiae Folium, remove hairs), Yu Bai Pi (Ulmus Alba Cortex), Mu Tong (Akebiae Caulis) (each 1 liang); Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) (3 qian); Chi Shao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Kui Zi (Abelmoschi Semen) (each 0.5 liang).
Grind into a coarse powder. Take 3 qian per dose, with 1.5 cups of water, add 1 fen of fresh Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), decoct to 0.6 cup, remove dregs, and take 3-4 times daily.
Answer: The Small Intestine is the fu-organ of reception and transformation; the Bladder is the official of the capital region. Qixuanzi stated: Located in the solitary fu-organ, it is called the Official of the Capital. Situated in the lower jiao, internally hollow, it stores fluids. If it receives Qi from the Qi Hai (Sea of Qi), it can excrete and flow. If heat pathogen seeps into the bladder (Pao), causing the bladder to twist and turn, it results in difficult urination. Alternatively, cold in the Kidney and uterus fails to warm and regulate the water passages, causing urination ten or more times day and night. Severe cases may lead to chaotic dreams and trance-like states. For cold patterns, Da Jian Zhong Tang Cong Rong Wan is appropriate; for heat patterns, Hu Po San is used (formula found in *Zhi Mi Fang*).
Bi Xie Wan: Benefits the Kidney and secures Qi, treating frequent urination.
Bi Xie (Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma) (processed with Qing Yan [Green Salt], 3 zhu, half a cup of water, boiled until cooked, then weighed to obtain 0.5 liang); Jin Mao Gou Ji (Cibotii Rhizoma, processed, 3 fen); Yi Zhi Zi (Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus, crushed, salt-fried, 0.5 liang); Rou Cong Rong (Cynomorii Herba, 1 liang, sliced and dried); Tu Si Zi (Cuscutae Semen, 0.5 liang, soaked in wine and ground); Ba Ji (Morinda Officinalis Radix, 0.5 liang); Du Zhong (Eucommiae Cortex, bran-fried, 0.5 liang); Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) (1 qian).
Grind into fine powder, make pills with wine paste the size of paulownia seeds. Take 40 pills per dose, with light salt water or rice soup on an empty stomach.
Dong Kui Zi San: Treats fetal restlessness during pregnancy, dribbling strangury, and lower abdominal pain.
Dong Kui Zi (Malvae Semen, stir-fried), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Sang Bai Pi (Mori Cortex), Chi Fu Ling (Poria with Red Coir), Chi Shao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (equal parts).
Crush the herbs. Take 4 qian per dose, with 1.5 cups of water, 5 slices of fresh Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), and 7 cun of scallion white, decoct to 0.7 cup, remove dregs, and take warm.
Che Qian Zi San: Clears residual heat in the Lower Jiao, treats urinary retention, dribbling strangury with pain.
Che Qian Zi (Plantago Seed), Bing Lang (Arecae Semen), Mu Tong (Akebiae Caulis), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Chi Shao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Chi Fu Ling (Poria with Red Coir), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Hua Shi (Talcum), Shi Wei (Pyrrosiae Folium, roasted, remove hairs) (each 1 liang).
Crush the herbs. Take 5 qian per dose, with 2 cups of water, decoct to 1 cup, take warm. Stop when urination becomes free; if not relieved, take again. Take before meals.
Wang You San: Treats heat accumulation in the Heart Meridian, red and astringent urinary retention, dribbling strangury with pain.
Hu Po (Amber) (any amount).
Grind into fine powder. Take 0.5 fen per dose, mixed with thickly decocted Xuanc Gen (Daylily Root) soup. Take before meals.
