Answer: When pathogenic factors merge into the Yin aspect, Dian disease (epilepsy/mental disorder characterized by depression) occurs; when they merge into the Yang aspect, Kuang disease (mania) occurs. Both are caused by Wind pathogens. Dian disease is characterized by sudden collapse to the ground, vomiting of salivary foam, deviation and spasm of the mouth and eyes, convulsive twisting of the limbs, loss of consciousness, and recovery after a long period. Kuang disease manifests as speech that ignores kinship distinctions, arrogance or self-perception of being virtuous, discarding clothes and running away, though there may be periods of spontaneous calmness. Additionally, during pregnancy, if the mother suffers a sudden severe fright, it can cause the fetus to develop Xian disease (epileptic seizures).
Dian disease is classified into five types: 1. Yang Dian, 2. Yin Dian, 3. Feng Dian (Wind Dian), 4. Shi Dian (Dampness Dian), and 5. Lao Dian (Exhaustion Dian). These names are derived from their respective etiologies. There are also Niu Dian (Ove Dian), Ma Dian (Horse Dian), Zhu Dian (Pig Dian), and Gou Dian (Dog Dian), named because the sounds and postures during an attack resemble those animals. Folklore states that patients with Dian disease should avoid eating meat from the six domestic animals, as the manifestations mimic these animals.
Da Sheng Yi Li Jin Dan (Great Sage Single-Grain Golden Pill): Treats various Wind-induced Jing Xian (startle epilepsy/seizures).
Ingredients: Da Chuan Wu Tou (Radix Aconiti Kusnezoffii), Hei Fu Zi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata), Bai Fu Zi (Rhizoma Typhonii), Bai Ji Li (Fructus Tribuli, stir-fried and thorns removed), Wu Ling Zhi (Trogopteri Dung, each 2 liang for the first three, 1 liang for the next two), Mo Yao (Resin Boswelliae, half liang, separately ground), Bai Fan (Alumen, calcined, half liang, separately ground), Bai Jiang Can (Bombyx Batryticatus, 1 liang, silk removed and stir-fried), She Xiang (Moschus, half liang, pure flesh), Xi Xiang Mo (Fine Fragrant Ink Stick, half liang, separately ground), Zhu Sha (Cinnabaris, half liang, separately ground), Jin Bo (Folium Aurum, 200 pieces for coating).
The first six ingredients are ground together into a fine powder. The latter four are finely ground and mixed. Form pills the size of a bullet, coat with Jin Bo, and dry in the shade. Take one pill after meals and before bed. Grind the pill in fresh Ginger Juice (Sheng Jiang Zi Ran Zhi), mix with hot wine, and ingest. Drink additional hot wine as desired. Lie down in a warm, draft-free place, cover with blankets, and allow sweating to occur for cure. For milder cases, divide one pill into two doses. Avoid wind-inducing foods. Pregnant women must not take this.
