Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Shao Yao (White Peony Root), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (each 2 qian), Hong Qu (Red Yeast Rice) (1 qian), Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) (4 fen), Yi Mu Cao (Leonuri Herba) (2 qian), plus Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Licorice Root) (1 qian) is sufficient. If lochia (postpartum discharge) has not cleared, add Ru Xiang (Olibanum) and Mo Yao (Myrrha) (each 2.5 qian), Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus) powder (1 qian). For blood deficiency, add E Jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin) (fried with clam powder, 2 qian); it will heal itself over time.
Postpartum Huoluan (Cholera-like syndrome characterized by vomiting and diarrhea) results from labor injury damaging Qi and Blood, leading to deficiency and impairment of the Zang-Fu organs, inability to transform and transport food, and subsequent contraction of Wind-Cold pathogen. When the ascending and descending of Yin and Yang are unsmooth, clear and turbid energies become chaotic in the intestines and stomach, cold and heat are imbalanced, and healthy Qi battles with pathogenic factors, causing upper vomiting and lower diarrhea; this is named Huoluan.
Postpartum Huoluan occurring while abdominal masses/pain from blood stasis remain:
([Commentary by Wu] This disease often occurs between summer and autumn. If vomiting and diarrhea occur simultaneously, it is considered true Huoluan, requiring Fuzi Lizhong Tang (Aconite Decoction to Regulate the Middle). If muscle cramps (Zhuanjin) occur, add Mu Gua (Chaenomeles Fruit). Delayed treatment renders it incurable.)
Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) (2 qian), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (4 qian), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Gan Cao (Licorice Root), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Huo Xiang (Pogostemonis Herba) (each 4 fen), Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus) (6 fen), Fu Ling (Poria), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) (3 slices), decoct and take orally.
Postpartum Huoluan with vomiting and diarrhea, cold extremities, without abdominal mass pain:
Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) (each 1 qian), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (2 qian), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Pao Jiang (Prepared Zingiberis Rhizoma), Ding Xiang (Caryophylli Flos), Gan Cao (Licorice Root) (each 4 fen), Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) (5 fen), grind into fine powder. Mix with rice water for administration, taking 2 qian per dose.
Postpartum Huoluan, continuous vomiting and diarrhea, without abdominal mass pain:
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) (each 2 qian), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) (8 fen), Fu Ling (Poria), Dou Kou (Tsaoko Fructus) (1 qian), Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) (3 slices).
The human Stomach is the sea of water and grain. Water and grain transform into essence to generate Qi and Blood, nourishing and moistening the Zang-Fu organs. Postpartum labor injury damages the Zang-Fu, allowing Cold pathogens to easily invade the intestines and stomach, causing rebellious Qi leading to vomiting and inability to eat. There are also cases of vomiting due to unresolved blood stasis, or vomiting caused by Phlegm-Qi entering the stomach and clouding the Stomach opening. If physicians can treat according to symptoms, there will be no errors.
Postpartum rebellious vomiting and refusal to eat.
