Treats cold colic (abdominal cramping pain caused by cold pathogen stagnation) in women, and deficiency-wasting with insufficiency (physical weakness and depletion of essence and qi). If there is severe abdominal cramping pain after childbirth, this formula does not contain Chuanxiong Rhizome (Chuanxiong), but contains White Peony Root (Shaoyao).
Chen Wuyue stated: Zhang Zhongjing's Mutton Decoction treats cold colic.
Administering it with Ginger and Mutton Soup yields invariably effective results. There was a case where a woman gave birth during a cold month; cold pathogen entered the birth canal, causing distension and fullness below the navel that could not be touched by hand. This was cold colic. The physician intended to treat her with Diding Tang (a formula for breaking blood stasis), believing there was blood stasis. Someone else said, "This is not the correct treatment! One may take Zhang Zhongjing's Mutton Decoction, using slightly less water." After two doses, she recovered.
Treats postpartum internal deficiency, cold pathogen entering the abdomen, causing abdominal cramping pain, passage of red and white dysentery, delirium with visual hallucinations (seeing ghosts); use Mutton Decoction.
Fatty Mutton Meat (one jin / 500g), Angelica Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Licorice Root (Gancao), White Peony Root (Shaoyao) (each one fen / approx. 3-5g; *Chanbao* records each as one liang / approx. 30g).
Cut the ingredients into small pieces. Boil the mutton meat in ten dou (approx. 2 liters) of water first, obtaining seven sheng (approx. 1.4 liters) of broth. Add the herbs and decoct further until two sheng (approx. 400 ml) remain. Strain and divide into doses for administration.
Treats postpartum cutting pain in the heart and abdomen, inability to eat, lack of qi energy, and sudden alternating chills and fever.
Angelica Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Szechwan Lovage Rhizome (Chuanxiong), Scutellaria Root (Huangqin), Ginseng Radix (Renshen), Licorice Root (Gancao), White Peony Root (Shaoyao), Saposhnikovia Root (Fangfeng), Fresh Ginger (Shengjiang) (each three fen / approx. 9-15g), Rhubarb (Dahuang) (two fen / approx. 6-10g, dosage should be adjusted according to patient's strength), Peach Kernel (Taoren) (eighty seeds).
Boil the above ingredients in seven sheng (approx. 1.4 liters) of water until two sheng (approx. 400 ml) remain. Add Rhubarb and boil for three additional boils. Divide into three doses.
The Mutton Decoction from *Qianjin* does not contain Rhubarb, Ginseng, or Peach Kernel, but uses mutton broth to decoct the herbs. (Cui Shi's formula is the same.)
Discussion states: Postpartum distension and pain in both hypochondriac regions are caused by retained water previously existing in the Bladder. Because lochia discharge is incomplete after childbirth, water accumulation causes obstruction and competes with qi, accumulating in the Bladder, thus leading to hypochondriac distension. The agitation between qi and water causes pain.
Treats postpartum blood and qi disharmony, with distending and painful hypochondriac regions.
Angelica Sinensis Radix (Danggui) (twelve fen), White Peony Root (Shaoyao), Platycodon Root (Kujie), Areca Seed (Binglang), Aurantium Fructus (Zhiqiao) (each eight fen), Cinnamon Bark (Guixin), Aquilaria Wood (Qingmuxiang), Bupleurum Root (Chaihu) (each six fen).
Cut the ingredients into small pieces. Decoct in two sheng (approx. 400 ml) of water until eight ge (approx. 160 ml) remain. Strain and administer warm in two doses on an empty stomach.
Treats postpartum failure of lochia discharge, blood and qi stagnation and obstruction, distending pain, and inability to eat.
Sappanwood (Sumu), Pueraria Thunbergiana Root (Zige), White Peony Root (Shaoyao), Angelica Sinensis Radix (Danggui) (each twelve fen and eight fen respectively), Cinnamon Bark (Guixin), Lygodii Spora (Puhuang) (each six fen), Fresh Rehmanniae Radix Juice (Shengdihuang Zhi) (three he).
Cut the ingredients into small pieces. Decoct in two sheng (approx. 400 ml) of water until seven he (approx. 140 ml) remain. Add Lygodii Spora and divide into two doses.
