Take regularly. Warm wine or vinegar broth may be used as preferred, taken on an empty stomach before meals.
For newborn infants, the midwife must urgently wrap her finger with cotton and wipe out any noxious matter from the infant's mouth until completely cleared; do not delay. If swallowed into the abdomen, it will inevitably cause various diseases (referred to as "Jade Restraint Disease" in *Shenghui Fang* and *Baojian Fang*). First, cut the umbilical cord, leaving only about two cun. Inspect the cord; if any small insects are found, remove them immediately, otherwise strange diseases will arise. Alternatively, tie it securely with thread before bathing the infant; otherwise, dampness enters the abdomen and causes Umbilical Wind disease (this requires an experienced midwife with skilled, gentle handling techniques). After swaddling, take one cun of raw Glycyrrhizae Radix (Gancao), crush and chop it, boil one he of water into a concentrated decoction, dip a cotton swab in it, and let the infant suckle. It is acceptable if half a he of noxious fluid is vomited up. (Modern practitioners only use concentrated decoctions of Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian) and Gancao juice, dipped on a cotton swab for the infant to suckle. Over three days, this expels noxious matter and stool, termed "Umbilical Stool." This avoids inducing vomiting.) Take one zi amount of high-quality Cinnabar (Chen Sha), grind finely, mix with cooked honey, place in the infant's mouth to suckle, to dispel fright pathogens, then breastfeed. From then on, feeding must be regulated by time and quantity; do not overfeed, lest it cause Milk Accumulation Disorder. Long-term overfeeding leads to regurgitation that is difficult to control. On the third day, bathe the infant using decoctions of Tiger Head Bone, Peach Branch, Pig Gallbladder, and Gold/Silver to reduce fright. (For ordinary bathing, adding Pig Gallbladder bile to water prevents sores and scabies.) Frequently check the infant's palate and inner cheeks in draft-free areas; if white blisters resembling membranes appear, scrape them off promptly with fingernails; repeat as they regenerate. (Referred to as "Goat Mouth" in *Baotong Bixiao*; if absent, do not interfere unnecessarily.) Also check under the tongue for double tongue. These conditions result from the mother consuming roasted, fried, fatty foods, alcohol, and hot-natured herbs during pregnancy. (*Baotong Bixiao* has specific remedies.) Apart from cauterizing or moxibustion on the umbilical cord on the third day, do not apply additional fire/moxa, lest it cause Fright Epilepsy. (Old methods used 14 moxa cones; now seven is standard.) In cold weather, dress the infant in parents' old clothes, not new silk or cotton; excessive warmth leads to weak sinews and bones. If the weather is warm and windless, have the nursemaid hold the child outdoors to expose them to wind and sun, strengthening qi and blood, hardening muscles, and enhancing resistance to wind-cold, preventing illness. Select a wet nurse who is vigorous, cheerful, well-fleshed, free of disease, understands temperature regulation, and manages diet properly. Her milk should be thick and white. Avoid giving the wet nurse excessively sour or salty food. Do not feed the infant immediately after the wet nurse has been exposed to extreme cold or heat, lest it cause Milk Accumulation, Fright Malnutrition, or dysentery. Strictly avoid these. At night, do not let the infant sleep on arms; use small bean bags to support the head near the wet nurse. Coverings must leave the head and face exposed. Continuous supine position may cause Fright Disease; turn the infant frequently. In summer, use cool mats. If breastfeeding at night, the wet nurse must sit up and hold the infant. Never breastfeed during sexual intercourse ("intercourse milk"), as it causes accumulation disorders. Keep the room moderately warm for infants up to three months. Wet nurses should not drink alcohol frequently, lest the infant develop phlegm-cough, fright-heat, or dizziness, affecting growth spurts ("bian zheng"). Issues like night crying and tidal fever due to improper feeding are handled by pediatric specialists; this is merely a brief overview. If feeding and care are managed correctly, the infant will remain healthy without needing regular herbal decoctions; this requires careful consideration. (See *Yang Shi Ying'er Lun*, *Chao Shi Bing Yuan*, *Ying Tong Bao Jian Fang*, Cheng Fu's *Bei Yao Fang*.)
