The disease of "Paozhuan" (bladder torsion/spasm leading to urinary retention) in women is caused by heat pathogen forcing the bladder. Or, holding urine forcibly, both lead to water qi pressing upon the bladder, causing it to curl and shrink without being able to fill and expand. External fluids should enter but cannot; internal urine should exit but cannot. Internal and external stagnation causes distension and blockage, hence termed "Paozhuan". Its presentation includes acute pain in the lower abdomen and inability to urinate. Severe cases may lead to death and are incurable.
The *Tai Ping Hui Min He Ji Ju Fang* contains Bawei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia Root), which treats female Paozhuan with urinary retention.
To treat Paozhuan in women and men, where urination has been blocked for several days. (*Qianjin Yi Fang*)
Hua Shi (Talcum, 1 liang) Hanshui Shi (Calcitum, 2 liang) Kuizi (Abelmoschi Fructus, 1 he)
Grind the above into powder. Use one dou of water, decoct until five sheng remain. Take frequently; after consuming one sheng, urination will likely become unobstructed.
Another prescription: Luafa (Calamistrum, burnt to ash) Kuizi (Abelmoschi Fructus) Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen)
Grind the above equally into fine powder. Take 2 qian each time, mixed with tea water.
To treat female Paozhuan and urinary obstruction. Also applicable to men.
Guocha Ye (Burnt Tea Leaf, 1 liang) Hua Shi (Talcum, ground fine, 0.5 liang)
Grind uniformly, mix with boiling water, and take 2 qian.
To treat Paozhuan and urinary obstruction. (From *Zhi Mi Fang*. The preceding condition is the same.)
Shiwei (Dewleaf Leycesteria Leaf, de-haired) Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Semen)
Grind equally into coarse powder. Take 5 qian each time. Decoct with two zhan of water until one zhan remains, strain, and take.
To treat women who hold urine forcibly, unable to rise at appropriate times, resulting in bladder torsion. After four or five days, when the condition becomes critical and life-threatening.
Hua Shi (Talcum, 2 liang) Luafa Hui (Calamistrum Ash, 1 liang)
Grind uniformly. Take 1 jin of Taobaipi (Pericarpium Persicae, inner bark), cook thoroughly, pound well, squeeze juice with three zhan of water. Warm half a zhan at any time, mix with 2 qian of powder, and take.
Another prescription: Use Hua Shi powder, taken with scallion soup, 2 qian per dose.
*Qianjin Yi Fang* treats female urinary obstruction.
Xingren (Prunus Armeniaca Seed, 7 grains, skin and tip removed)
Take this single ingredient, stir-fry with bran until yellow, grind into fine powder, mix with water and take; urination will immediately flow freely.
Another prescription: Zicao (Arnebiae Radix seu Rhizoma) ground into powder, taken with Jinghua Shui (first drawn well water), three finger-pinches amount; urination will immediately flow freely. It is also said that Ziwan (Asteris Radix) can be used.
If sudden total obstruction occurs, with lower abdominal distension and urgency, Qi rushing up to strike the heart, causing suffocation and near-death sensation. This is due to violent Qi attacking and accumulating in the Bladder, or arising from sorrow and fright, where Qi has no outlet, becoming depressed and closed without flowing, striking the Paolian (bladder ligament/attachment) causing misalignment. Pulse diagnosis reveals the right hand pulse is choppy and small, while the left hand pulse is rapid and large. Congbai Tang (Scallion Decoction) is indicated.
