(From *Ben Shi Fang*) Treating women's diseases. These are mostly characterized by menstrual flow that is alternatively excessive and scanty, occurring either early or late, with intermittent pain. Physicians generally refer to this simply as "menstrual disease" (Jing Bing). They fail to specify whether it is Yin overcoming Yang or Yang overcoming Yin; therefore, medication rarely proves effective. Generally, when Yin Qi overcomes Yang Qi, the uterus becomes cold, and blood fails to circulate normally. As stated in the classics: "When heaven is cold and earth frozen, water congeals into ice," thus causing the flow to be scanty and delayed until after the expected month. Conversely, if Yang Qi overcomes Yin Qi, blood flows and scatters excessively. As stated in the classics: "When heaven is hot and earth warm, menstrual water boils and overflows," thus causing the flow to be excessive and occurring before the expected month. One must understand Yin and Yang, which refer to Qi and Blood, ensuring they do not overcome each other, with balance being the source of well-being.
