Discussion: The qi of the four seasons and eight directions transforms into Wind Pathogen (Feng Xie). It is customary to observe the wind direction on the day of Winter Solstice. If the wind comes from its proper direction (the ruling quarter), it nourishes all things; if it does not come from the proper direction, it is called Empty Evil (Xu Xie) or Thief Evil, which harms all things. When the human body is deficient, it becomes susceptible to invasion. If the Wind Pathogen lodges in the skin and enters the meridians, it causes stubborn bi-syndrome and numbness/loss of sensation. If it enters the sinews and vessels, accompanied by Cold, it causes spasms and deviation; accompanied by Warmth, it causes flaccidity and laxity. If it enters the zang-fu organs, it leads to mental confusion and palpitations. All five zang organs have their back-shu points located on the back. When the zang-fu are deficient, Wind Pathogen enters through these back-shu points, causing various diseases according to the affected organs and meridians. If Wind Stroke occurs during pregnancy and is not treated early, it may lead to miscarriage.
