Commentary states: What is postpartum wind-stroke? The answer is: forcing oneself out of bed within five to seven days after childbirth; or injuring the body through sexual intercourse within one month; or harboring sorrow and anger, disturbing the harmony of the Chong and Ren vessels; or due to moxibustion, damaging the Zang-Fu organs. At the onset of the disease, with symptoms such as dry eyes, locked jaw, muscle twitching, gradually progressing to stiffness and rigidity of the tendons in the waist and spine, it is incurable. This is caused by human error, not by an accidental contraction of Wind pathogen.
Chen Wuyue commented: Regarding the inquiry on postpartum wind-stroke, Wind is an external pathogen, and deficiency of Blood may indeed make one susceptible to it. However, directly answering that it is self-inflicted and incurable makes the question and answer disjointed. How can this guide future generations? The difficulty in establishing theories is thus. If it were true wind-stroke, differentiation should be based on pulse diagnosis to determine which Zang organ is affected, and treatment should follow the classics. Forcing out of bed, sexual intercourse within a month, emotional turmoil, and moxibustion do not belong to the category of wind-stroke; Ru-lao (postpartum consumptive disease), Xing-qi (emotional dysfunction), and Fire pathogen each have their specific treatments. I do not elaborate on non-postpartum diseases here; students should understand this.
