To treat pregnant women suffering from malaria, with symptoms of alternating chills and fever, headache, and vexation. Use Huangqin San (Coptis Powder).
Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae), Maidong (Radix Ophiopogonis) (decored, each 1 liang), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum, 2 liang), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 0.5 liang), Wumei (Fructus Mume, 14 pieces).
The above herbs are chopped. Take 4 qian per dose. Add 1 zhen of water, decoct until 6 fen remains, remove the dregs, and take warm.
To treat all types of malaria in men and women. Some present with chills preceding fever, or fever preceding chills; some have more chills than fever, or more fever than chills. Some occur once a day, twice or three times a day; some occur on consecutive days, every other day, or every three to four days. Regardless of whether it is Gui Malaria (Ghost Malaria), Shi Malaria (Food Malaria), or conditions resembling malaria due to maladaptation to local climate and miasma, all are treated. Use Qibao San (Seven Treasures Powder).
Changshan (Radix Dichroae), Houpo (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis) (processed with ginger juice), Qingpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride), Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae) (neither removes the white pith), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Binglang (Semen Arecae), Caoguo (Fructus Tsaoko) (peeled).
The above herbs are divided equally, chopped, and taken at 0.5 liang per dose. On the night before the expected onset, decoct 1 bowl of water and 1 zhan of wine until 1 large zhan remains. Filter the liquid and leave it exposed overnight. Then, decoct the dregs again with wine and water according to the previous method, filter out the dregs, store in a separate bowl, and leave exposed overnight. The next morning, when the attack is due, heat warm, face east, first consume the initial decoction, rest briefly, then consume the second decoction (dregs). This has great miraculous efficacy. I once treated a pregnant woman who contracted malaria at six or seven months of pregnancy, presenting with chills preceding fever and floating-tight pulses in all six positions. Other physicians used Chaihu Tang (Bupleurum Decoction) and Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) without effect. I stated that this disease cannot be cured without Changshan (Radix Dichroae), but the other physicians refused. After several days of delay, the condition worsened with no other options, so she reluctantly agreed to my treatment. A single dose of Qibao San (Seven Treasures Powder) resulted in a cure.
The Yellow Emperor asked: "When a woman is heavily pregnant, how should toxic substances be used?" Qibo replied: "If there is a pathological cause, the pathogen will bear the harm, and the fetus will not be injured." The Emperor said: "I wish to hear the reasoning behind this. What does it mean?" Qibo replied: "When there are large accumulations and aggregations, attacking methods may be employed, but one should stop when the pathology has diminished by more than half. Is it not because one must carefully examine the nature and flavor of the herbs, clarify the therapeutic formula, maintain the golden mean, and cease treatment when the disease has improved by half, avoiding excess and residual harm? In such cases, what doubt could there be regarding attacking treatment!"
