Hypochondriac pain caused by blood stasis invading the Liver meridian: lesions on the left are predominantly of Blood, while those on the right are predominantly of Qi; these must be clearly distinguished. For Blood stasis, Yanhu San (Corydalis Rhizome Powder) is indicated; for Qi stagnation, Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) added with Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) and Qing Pi (Aurantii Fructus Pericarpium) is suitable. If the pain is due to deficiency from excessive blood loss, Bazhen Tang (Eight Treasure Decoction) added with Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex) should be used to tonify Ying Blood.
Lower back pain radiating to both thighs is caused by wind-cold retention and blood stasis obstructing the meridians. Foshou San (Hand-holding Powder) added with Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix) and Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex), or Xuduan (Dipsaci Radix), Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), and Sang Jisheng (Taxilli Herba) may be used. If excessive blood loss during childbirth injures the Qi and Blood of the Three Yin meridians, Liuwei Dihuang Tang (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Decoction) added with Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata), Xuduan (Dipsaci Radix), and Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex) should be employed for warming and tonification.
Chentong San (Pain-Relieving Powder) is indicated for postpartum body pain due to deficiency of Ying Blood; if caused by external pathogenic invasion, exterior symptoms appear first. Chentong San consists of Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Xie Bai (Allii Macrostemonis Bulbus), and Gui Xin (Cinnamomi Ramulus). If the face and lips are purple and swollen with body pain, it is necessarily due to retained stasis; Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with Qin Jiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix), Tao Ren (Persicae Semen), Moyao (Myrrha), and Hong Hua (Carthami Flos) should be used to promote circulation and resolve stasis.
