In the human body, Qi belongs to Yang, and Blood belongs to Yin. When Yin and Yang are harmonious and flowing smoothly, there is no disease. The head is the meeting point of all Yang meridians. After childbirth, excessive blood loss leads to a deficiency of Yin Qi, causing deficient Yang to lose its anchorage and rush upward to the head, resulting in headache. By replenishing the Blood, the Yang Qi can be subdued and relaxed, and the headache will cease spontaneously. Occasionally, retained lochia (stagnant blood) remains in the uterus. Since the channel of Foot-Jueyin Liver pierces through the vertex, this may cause vertex headache. Even if accompanied by fever and aversion to cold, it is appropriate to use Shenghua Tang (Decoction for Generating New Blood) with modifications. One must be cautious about using herbs such as Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) and Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), because the deficiency of healthy Yang allows turbid Yin to invade the upper part and sink into the sea of marrow, causing distension and pain. Unless clear Yang rises and recovers, turbid Yin cannot descend. This pathology arises from internal pathogens, unlike external pathogens which can be resolved through diaphoresis (sweating method). Moreover, Chuanxiong and Ganjiang (Dried Ginger) in Shenghua Tang can also disperse exterior pathogens, and Taoren (Persicae Semen) can expel stasis; thus, they can treat both aspects simultaneously. With slight additions based on symptoms, why resort to another prescription?
The epigastrium is located below the heart. Postpartum, pain may occur due to invasion of cold pathogen or consumption of cold foods. It is necessary to dispel the cold accumulation in the stomach, which can be effectively treated with Shenghua Life-Efficiency Formula, ensuring recovery. If one solely uses hot-natured drugs to attack cold, although the pain may stop, it may cause reckless movement of blood, further weakening the postpartum mother. Generally, cold-induced pain involves deficiency alongside cold, while dry-heat-induced pain requires the assistance of Yin-nourishing herbs to restrain hyperactivity. For lingering, dull pain, one should inquire whether blood clots have been completely expelled; if massage provides slight relief, it indicates a deficiency pattern, requiring tonic formulas. Broadly speaking, when cold and food stagnation attack upward toward the heart, it causes heart pain; when it attacks the abdomen, it causes abdominal pain. The treatment principles for heart and abdominal pain are largely similar. Feng Shi stated: Postpartum Yin-blood deficiency allows fire to rush upward to the Pericardium collateral, named Pericardium Collateral Pain, which should be primarily treated with Guipi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction). *Yitong* (Medical Generalities) treats it with Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) plus Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix).
